The historic town center and dinosaur history give Arén two special themes for a trip. There are also trails to fossil sites and a mountain bike loop along the Noguera Ribagorzana. The different measurements are useful for planning: from the town center, you can reach a fossil bone site in about an hour on foot; Mountain Bike Route 16 is 23.63 km long. This makes it possible to plan the walk by travel time and the cycling route by distance, without treating the two types of excursion as equivalent.

Medieval Layout and Church Architecture

Arén’s historic town center was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural in 2007. Its medieval layout can be seen in its narrow streets, large arches, arcaded squares, and hidden passageways. These features amount to more than a series of individual sights: they shape the layout of the town center and give it a clearly recognizable historic character. If you are interested in architectural history, it is worth looking at these different forms of public space—from narrow streets to arcaded squares.

The religious buildings also offer different architectural features. On the grounds of Castillo del Gobernador, only the portal of the Romanesque castle church remains. The Church of San Martín in Arén, by contrast, is a rectangular building with three naves and chapels between the buttresses. The contrast is clear: at Castillo del Gobernador, the surviving portal is the focus, while San Martín is best understood through its overall plan and the arrangement of its naves and chapels. Both features add to the picture of Arén’s historic architecture, although the buildings cannot be described in the same way.

Dinosaur Discoveries in Town and Along the Trails

The Museo de los Dinosaurios de Ribagorza is located in the historic town center on the site of Arén’s former town hall, the historic Casa de la Vila. Covering more than 500 square meters, the museum features dioramas, reconstructions, original fossils, and audiovisual materials. Vivid displays sit alongside original finds. Its location in the historic center connects the dinosaur theme with a building that is itself part of the town’s history: the Casa de la Vila was the former town hall.

The Ruta de Icnitas starts in the streets of Arén and leads to one of the first dinosaur track sites discovered in Aragón. An approximate walking time is given for another trail option: from the town center, you can reach the fossil bone site near Arén in about an hour on foot via an easy, signposted trail. The two details help with different decisions—the route to a track site connects with the history of the discovery, while the walk to the fossil bone site can be planned by approximate travel time.

Mountain Bike Route along the Noguera Ribagorzana

Mountain Bike Route 16 runs from Arén through Sopeira and Cornudella and back to Arén, and is 23.63 km long. It follows the banks of the Noguera Ribagorzana, passing through riverside landscapes and over steeper slopes with views of the valley. The route therefore combines two different landscape experiences: the river and its banks on the one hand, and the slopes with valley views on the other. Along with the walk to the fossil bone site, the route offers another way to explore the area around Arén—with a clearly specified cycling distance rather than an approximate walking time.
