The Iglesia de la Santa Cruz and the Valcuerna give Peñalba two distinct themes for planning a trip: a church with a clearly structured design and a landscape shaped by the river and ravine. Feast days, church architecture and a nature route offer different ways to shape your visit; the specific dates can help you choose when to travel.

Valcuerna: River and Ravine

The Valcuerna is the only river that rises in Los Monegros and flows entirely through Los Monegros. The Valcuerna area is considered one of the most nature-rich areas in Los Monegros because of its diversity. At the Barranco de la Valcuerna, vegetation arches over the water to form a green tunnel of tamarisks.

The Barranco de la Valcuerna is designated as a public hiking trail. A cycling tour of about two and a half hours follows the ravine from Peñalba to the Caspe Reservoir. From Peñalba, you can reach the Barranco de la Valcuerna trail via the Valcuerna access road as far as the A-2410; from there, continue downhill on foot or by bicycle. The cycling tour thus combines an approximate duration with a clearly named destination.

The Iglesia de la Santa Cruz

The floor plan of the Iglesia de la Santa Cruz is closer to a Greek cross than a Latin cross. It comprises a large central nave and two smaller side aisles. The tower also has a clearly defined form: it is built of brick and consists of three sections. The two lower sections are square, while the upper one is octagonal.

The main altar is dedicated to the Finding of the Holy Cross. Here, the architecture and religious significance complement each other in a tangible way: the floor plan and tower define the building, while the altar’s dedication connects it to the Santa Cruz.

Feast Days and Historical Connections

The feast of the Santa Cruz takes place on 3 May; the smaller celebration in honor of the Virgen del Rosario falls on 7 October. On Good Friday, Peñalba holds the El Reloj procession. Another religious tradition is the pilgrimage in honor of Santa Quiteria on 22 May. The calendar therefore brings together several spring occasions and one date in autumn. If you want to plan your trip around a particular feast, check the relevant event program in advance.

Peñalba lies on the Catalan branch of the Camino de Santiago. Film history is also part of the town’s story: in 1992, Peñalba was one of the filming locations for Bigas Luna’s film “Jamón, jamón.” Together with the feast days, this offers different cultural perspectives on the town, without requiring every trip to have the same focus.

Getting Your Bearings in Peñalba

The town center of Peñalba is at kilometre 400 of the N-II. This kilometre marker provides a precise reference for your journey. The Ermita de Santa Quiteria can be reached without crossing the N-II; a passage beneath a bridge leads across the Barranco de la Valcuerna.

When planning your trip, you can choose between several distinct focuses: church architecture and the calendar of feast days, the history of the Camino de Santiago and film, or trails and scenery along the Valcuerna. The approximate duration of the cycling tour and its route to the Caspe Reservoir provide a specific time and geographical reference for the nature-focused part of your trip.
