Binéfar can be explored through a range of travel interests: walks in the San Quílez area, local traditions and cultural history. This distinction can help with your planning: the trails offer routes of varying lengths, while the pilgrimage and festivals are tied to specific occasions. Historic sites of remembrance and contemporary culture each offer their own perspective.

Trails and the feast day at San Quílez

The Ermita de San Quílez is within Binéfar, in the Sierra de Alcort and surrounded by a pine forest. The San Quílez area has short walking trails suitable for children and people with reduced mobility. The Camino de San Quílez also includes longer routes of 7 or 13 kilometres. This makes route length a useful point of distinction: the short walks and the two longer options give you different ways to plan your visit.

On Easter Monday, a pilgrimage to the Ermita de San Quílez is part of local tradition. As well as a mass, traditional Aragonese games, Cucañas and dancing take place there. If you are interested in the Ronda de la Víspera, it is associated with Binéfar’s Fiestas Mayores and has origins dating back to the 19th century. Its present-day form preserves its essence, but is adapted to the calendar and availability of the local rondalla. If you are planning a trip around these traditions, check the relevant dates in advance.

Traces of the town’s history

The Treaty of Binéfar was signed in Binéfar on 6 October 1363 by King Pedro IV and Don Enrique de Trastámara. Another historical memorial is the Cruz de Término: it reconstructs a lost 15th-century Gothic cross and was inaugurated in 1997. The birthplace of Padre Llanas on Calle Mayor commemorates the religious order member, who was born in 1843.

A black-and-white urban art mural in Plaza La Litera also reflects the history of the town. It reproduces an old photograph of the square and is presented as a tribute to the town’s collective memory and the history of this plaza. In Binéfar, you will encounter different ways of remembering the past: a historic treaty, a reconstructed cross, a birthplace and a mural connected to the plaza.

Puppet theatre and getting there

Imaginaria adds a contemporary cultural dimension. The festival has been running since 2013 and is dedicated to contemporary puppet theatre that is closely connected to the local community. Together with the historic sites and traditions, it offers a different way to experience Binéfar than a walk near San Quílez.

For getting there, travel times to two larger cities offer a practical point of reference: Lleida is less than 30 minutes from Binéfar, while Barcelona is just over two hours away. Actual travel times vary depending on the route and traffic.
