In Tolva, a townscape shaped by its defensive history meets a range of opportunities for walking. The GR 18 Senderos por La Ribagorza long-distance trail passes through the town; paths and tracks in the municipality are suitable for half-day excursions. If you are considering Tolva as a destination, you can choose between architecture and history, a long-distance route and shorter walks.

Townscape and architectural history

Traditional architecture is considered Tolva’s main tourist attraction, especially the Plaza Mayor. Three main streets and two squares define the layout: one square is in the lower part of the town and the other in the upper part. This division reflects Tolva’s defensive past. Several entrances to the main area have been preserved and are also part of this town layout.

At the western edge of the old town, next to the access road, stands the Ermita de Santa Anastasia. It has a rectangular floor plan and a single-nave interior. Shallow chapels lie between the side buttresses; the building ends in a polygonal apse.

Castillo de Falces and its history

The history of Castillo de Falces dates back to 1062. At that time, Ramiro I commissioned the brothers Agila de Falces to build it. It was intended to defend the borders of Ribagorza and contribute to the resettlement of the area. The ruins stand on a rocky ridge accessible by a forest track. If you plan to visit, check access in advance.

When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the ruins’ historical significance and their location: the history tells of the site’s original purpose, while the rocky ridge marks its place in the landscape. This allows you to consider the castle as part of Tolva’s past without conflating its role with the present-day town layout or walking trails.

Walking trails and the Congosto de Cajigar

The GR 18 Senderos por La Ribagorza passes through Tolva. There are also paths and tracks in the municipality for walks. They can be covered without major difficulty and are suitable for half-day excursions. This means hiking plans can include two different scales: a long-distance trail that runs through the town and shorter walks with an explicitly stated time frame. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

The Congosto de Cajigar, also known as the Congosto del Cajigar, is a narrow passage formed by erosion from the Cajigar River. The gorge is about two kilometres long, with an elevation difference of approximately 50 metres. The access route starts at Barranco Seco near Tolva. Leave your vehicle there, then follow the ravine uphill on foot. Conditions can vary by season, so it is advisable to check the trail conditions before setting out.

Getting there and choosing a base

The route of the N-230 national road gives Tolva a quick connection to towns such as Benabarre. When choosing somewhere to stay, this road connection is an additional consideration alongside the townscape and planned activities. The routes and places mentioned offer different starting points for your plans, rather than prescribing a single excursion.
