Biescas lies in an ancient glacial valley through which the Río Gállego now flows. The river divides the town into the two districts of San Pedro and El Salvador. This blend of local history, geological landscape and nearby trails shapes the options for a stay: you can explore architectural history, plan a walk or take seasonal cultural events into account.

Architectural History and Local Life

The parish church of El Salvador in Biescas has Romanesque origins. La Torraza, now an interpretation centre, offers another insight into the town’s history. It explores the region’s traditional architecture, historic crafts and the materials used in building and other work. The history and life of Biescas in the 16th century are also among its topics.

In the Barrio de la Peña, on the edge of the cliff, stands the group of buildings known as the Casas colgantes of Biescas. You can also discover the remains of the medieval town wall there. Together with La Torraza and the Romanesque parish church of El Salvador, these sites offer different ways to explore the past: architecture and crafts sit alongside traces of the town’s former defences.

Trails and Landscape around Biescas

The Señoritas de Arás, also known as the Chimeneas de las Hadas, are geological formations made of moraine deposits. They lie near the Barranco de Arás and are of considerable scientific and scenic value. An easy circular trail leads to the formations, starting in Biescas and suitable for families.

The Ruta Pelaire offers another practical point of reference for planning a trip: it is an 11-kilometre circular trail with an elevation gain of approximately 250 metres, starting and ending at the Biescas tourist information office. The mostly shaded trail is considered very easy and is recommended for all age groups, especially families. A hiking trail from Biescas also leads to the Ermita de Santa Elena; the stated walking time is approximately two hours. Yellow metal plaques from the Sendero Turístico de Aragón mark this trail.

For a shorter paved route, consider the Vía Verde del Alto Gállego. It runs parallel to the Río Gállego from Biescas to the mouth of the Barranco del Sía. The route is intended for all age groups and is used for short family outings. There is also a beginner-friendly via ferrata at Santa Elena for adults and children; conditions and operation may vary.

A tourist road cycling route also passes through all the villages in the municipality. It starts and ends in Biescas and includes three mountain passes. This makes it different from the trails described as a short paved route, an easy circular walk or a hike with an approximate duration of two hours.

Cultural Events Throughout the Year

The Villa de Biescas National Amateur Theatre Competition was launched in 2010 and takes place annually from January to March. Groups from all over Spain can take part. The Feria de Otoño de Biescas, meanwhile, takes place at the end of October. Its programme combines livestock shows and auctions with handicrafts, performances, exhibitions and product tastings. If you would like to plan a trip around either event, schedule your visit for the relevant period.

The two events represent different seasonal highlights: the theatre competition takes place from January to March, while the autumn fair is held at the end of October. When choosing your travel dates, you can therefore take both the cultural programme and your plans to explore the architecture, landscapes and trails into account.

Getting There from Zaragoza

By car, the road route from Zaragoza follows the A-23 towards Huesca, then continues on the motorway towards Sabiñánigo and finally takes the N-260 to Biescas. As road conditions may change, it is advisable to check the route before setting off.

To travel by bus, first take the Zaragoza–Jaca route to Sabiñánigo. There, change to a bus on the Jaca–Formigal route, which stops in Biescas. Check the timetable before travelling, as schedules may change. When choosing your accommodation, you can also take into account whether you plan to use the road or bus connection.
