For a stay in Yebra de Basa, two clear focal points go hand in hand: the Santa Orosia tradition and the routes on Monte Oturia. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first consider whether your visit will focus on the annual pilgrimage or on hiking and scenery. June 25 is a fixed date; the routes differ in their course and length.

Santa Orosia: pilgrimage and church interior

In the parish church of San Lorenzo, the relic of Santa Orosia’s head is kept in a cabinet in the main altar. The annual Romería de Santa Orosia also sets out on foot from Yebra de Basa to the sanctuary at Puerto. It takes place on June 25 and includes several stops at chapels as well as ritual activities. After Mass at the Ermita del Puerto, the relic is venerated publicly.

Another pilgrimage is the Romería de las Escoronillas. It leads from Yebra de Basa along the Camino de las ermitas to the Iglesia de las Cuevas. The villages of Ballibasa take part in this procession with processional crosses. The Centro de Interpretación de Santa Orosia explores the traditional legend of the saint and her significance for Yebra de Basa and the surrounding villages.

Architecture and local heritage

The typical mountain architecture of Yebra de Basa includes stone façades, steeply pitched roofs, funnel-shaped chimneys and espantabrujas (witch-deflectors). Another tangible piece of architectural heritage is the Pozo Nevero of Yebra: it is circular, 5.30 metres in diameter and 8 metres deep. The Dance de Santa Orosia uses a chiflo and a salterio; the salterio is also called a string drum.

The Ruta de las ermitas and Monte Oturia

The Ruta de las ermitas begins on a path to the left before the entrance to Yebra de Basa and leads to the summit of Monte Oturia. Eight hermitages line the route, four of them built directly into the rock. The route offers a chance to explore the conglomerate geology of Monte Oturia. Pastures, artos (thorny shrubs), junipers, oaks and birches grow along the way. From the Ermita de O Zoque, you can see the parish church of Yebra and the temple at Puerto. Griffon vultures, bearded vultures and golden eagles can be seen in the sky, though sightings are not guaranteed.

Hiking and mountain biking routes compared

The first stage of the PR-HU 6 is a 20.2-kilometre trek from Yebra de Basa via Sobás, Fanlillo and Pardina Feners to Fiscal; the stated duration is seven hours. The GR-16.1 Santa Orosia variant runs for 15.3 kilometres from Susín via Santa Orosia to Yebra de Basa. It is shorter than the PR-HU 6 stage in terms of distance; the seven-hour estimate applies to the PR stage. Check route details and current conditions before hiking.

There are also different mountain biking routes: the linear Oturia Enduro route starts in Yebra de Basa, first climbs for a long stretch to the summit of Oturia at 1,920 metres, and ends in Biescas. Another mountain biking route starts in Yebra de Basa and climbs along the track to the Ermita de Santa Orosia. When planning these routes, take current trail conditions into account.
