At an altitude of 1,305 metres, Sallent de Gállego lies at the upper end of the Valle de Tena, at the end of the Lanuza Reservoir and below Peña Foratata. Between the reservoir, hiking trails and historic buildings, there are several specific themes to choose from for your stay. When planning, you can first decide whether you want to focus on outdoor activity or the town’s history.

Compare trails around the Lanuza Reservoir

The circuit around the Lanuza Reservoir starts in Sallent de Gállego, passes through Lanuza and returns to Sallent along a dirt track on the right bank of the Gállego. It is just over six kilometres long and suitable for families. Trail conditions may change, so check them before setting out.

The GR 16 also starts in Sallent, where it connects with the trans-Pyrenean GR 11, and passes by the Lanuza Reservoir on its way towards Panticosa. The circuit returns to Sallent; by contrast, the GR 16’s connection with the GR 11 and its direction towards Panticosa shape the route plan. This gives you a clear choice between a circular route and one with a different described course.

Another option is a one-hour horseback ride with Hípica Sallent in the area around Sallent, by the Aguas Limpias River and in the Sandicosa area. Booking and seasonal availability may change. If a ride is part of your plans, check availability for your travel dates in advance.

Church, bridge and viewpoint

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was built in the early 16th century in the Gothic style on the site of an earlier Romanesque church. The main altar dates from 1537 and features sixteen painted panels. Thus, the church’s construction history, including its earlier predecessor, and a precisely dated furnishing are distinct aspects of the building. It is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category.

The medieval Puente Medieval is worth a visit. Next to it are a children’s playground and a picnic area, so the bridge and these facilities are right beside each other. Sallent is also home to the Mirador del Salto viewpoint. Together, these places offer different points of interest for planning: a historic structure, nearby recreational facilities and a viewpoint.

Leisure and seasonal planning

The municipality’s sports and leisure facilities include a swimming pool, tennis courts, equestrian facilities, a frontón and a climbing wall. If a particular facility is important for your stay, check its current availability.

Pirineos Sur uses the streets and public spaces of Sallent de Gállego for dance, new circus and street parades. The programme varies with each edition, so plan around the dates and the programme for that edition.

The Aramón Formigal-Panticosa ski resort also offers a specific winter sports option: it has 182 kilometres of skiable terrain and 147 runs of varying difficulty. These figures may change from one season to the next. If you are including skiing in your travel plans, check the figures for the relevant season.

Find hotels to suit your travel plans

When looking for hotels in Sallent de Gállego, first decide what you want to focus on: hiking, local history or a seasonal activity. Check current availability before booking.
