Salamanca’s old town reflects several art-historical periods. The Ciudad Vieja de Salamanca has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. Its notable monuments include Romanesque, Gothic, Moorish, Renaissance and Baroque forms. The old town therefore represents not a single style, but different architectural and artistic histories that shape the historic centre.

A special detail awaits in the Escuelas Menores: one of its teaching rooms preserves a ceiling painted by Fernando Gállego. If you would like to shift your attention from the major stylistic periods to a single work of art, this painting offers a tangible way to explore the site’s art history. It complements the architectural variety with a surviving work inside a teaching room.

Cathedral views and art history

The Ieronimus interior route brings together the cathedral’s history and art with several viewpoints. It presents 900 years of history and art and leads to the Cuerpo de Campanas, which offers views of Salamanca in all four cardinal directions. The route also provides access to the terrace of the Torre Mocha and the Torre del Gallo; from the inner walkway, you can look out over the New Cathedral. Ieronimus thus leads not just to a single viewpoint, but connects different perspectives within the cathedral complex with its long history.

Casa Lis offers a different perspective on time. The Museum of Art Nouveau and Art Deco is devoted to decorative arts from the final decades of the 19th century through the Second World War. While the old town reveals its architectural variety across several periods, Casa Lis focuses on decorative arts and a period extending into the 20th century. These offer different ways of exploring cultural history side by side.

The Centro de Interpretación de las murallas salmantinas, Salmantica Sedes Antiqua Castrorum, presents the defensive system of the Iron Age city of Helmantiké and displays a section of the ancient city wall. Here, the focus is on how the Iron Age city was defended. The Huerto de Calixto y Melibea also tells a story through its location: the garden sits on the city wall below the cathedral towers. At this site, the garden, fortifications and cathedral towers have a clear spatial relationship.

The banks of the Tormes in Salamanca are part of the city’s natural landscape. They form a riverside area of great natural value, adding a landscape perspective to the city’s architectural discoveries.

Routes and landscapes of the province

At the provincial level, the perspective changes. Salamanca Province encompasses valleys and forests as well as plains, streams and rivers. Among its notable natural parks is the Arribes del Duero Natural Park. The best way to reach Arribes del Duero is by car.

The Senda del Duero is a 115-kilometre linear walking route. Of its 42 stages, the last ten pass through the Salamanca area and lead to regional architecture and ethnography, as well as local customs, festivities and traditions. The route therefore offers cultural themes alongside walking. The Ruta Vía de la Plata runs from Seville to Gijón and passes through Salamanca; Salamanca Province is also part of the Camino de la Lengua Castellana. Each route offers a different way to explore the region: through its stages and cultural themes, or through its place within longer routes.

In Guijuelo, the Museo de la Industria Chacinera presents the region’s tradition of ham production. This focus adds a theme of regional production traditions to the area’s buildings, landscapes and routes. Salamanca therefore offers a range of different discoveries: UNESCO World Heritage and the art of the old town, the history of the cathedral, the riverside landscape of the Tormes, and the routes and natural areas of the province.
