In Villamayor, the history of natural stone, the architectural history of the Iglesia Parroquial de San Miguel and routes along the Tormes come together. This gives you a clear choice when planning your trip: would you like to learn about the stone and how it is used, follow the town’s historical traces, or set aside time for a walk by the river? Event dates can also help you choose the right time to travel.

Piedra de Villamayor: Stone and Architecture

Piedra de Villamayor is a clay-rich sedimentary rock. It is easy to cut and work, making it suitable for ornamentation and sculpture. Traditionally, the stone has been used as a building material, including in Villamayor’s homes. Historic and artistic buildings and monuments in Salamanca are another part of this stone tradition.

The old quarries of Las Cocinitas are considered the source of the golden-colored stone used to build Salamanca’s notable buildings. These include the cathedrals, the Plaza Mayor and the façade of the University of Salamanca. The Hábitat Minero adds a look at quarry work: it shows how work was carried out in Villamayor’s quarries in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.

The Church’s History in Several Stages

The Iglesia Parroquial de San Miguel originated from the Romanesque Ermita de San Ginés. Renovations in the 16th and 18th centuries shaped its present appearance, which was completed in 1777 under the direction of Jerónimo García de Quiñones. The church therefore reflects a longer architectural history rather than a single period of construction.

A slate inscription in the Iglesia commemorates the lightning strike of August 1, 1774, known as “el centellazo.” The date falls just a few years before the completion of the church’s present appearance. However, the two events are part of different stories: the renovations shaped the building, while the inscription commemorates the lightning strike.

Walking or Cycling along the Tormes

The Los Molinos route follows the Tormes and can be covered by bike or on foot. Bear the warning about summer heat in mind when planning your trip. The Molino de El Canto is a distinct natural and historical attraction: built in the 18th century, the mill is now a wetland with diverse animal and plant life.

Another option is El Tormes piedra a piedra, an approximately 3.8-kilometer walk along the riverbank between the Molino de la Moral and the Molino del Canto. The route combines information about riverside plants with landscape views associated with painting and literature.

Festivals as a Possible Travel Date

The Feria de la Piedra has been held in May since 2000, in the week before the patron saint festivals. Its week-long program celebrates and promotes local natural stone. It includes a sculpture competition and exhibitions of works and artists. If you would like to plan your stay around the Feria, check the specific event dates in advance.

The Fiestas de Agosto take place in mid-August. The listed activities include archery, fencing, football and board games, as well as a soapbox race, street theater, dances, open-air dance events and a communal meal. The recurring Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios also features a twelve-day program of cultural, sporting, musical and social activities. These event descriptions offer different reasons to plan a trip; settle on a date only after checking the relevant days.
