The Ruta de los Caños passes water channels, springs, washhouses and pools. Along with Sorihuela’s churches, rock-cut tombs and granite landscape, it offers specific points of interest to help you choose what to see based on your interests. When planning, consider both the different routes and the cultural and natural attractions.
Walking and cycling loops
The Ruta de los Caños is a three-kilometre loop. It takes about an hour and a half to complete. Along the way are sixteen water channels, springs, washhouses and pools. The route therefore combines a manageable distance with several water-related features. Check the trail conditions locally before setting out.
Another option is the Ruta BTT de la Plata – Circular Sorihuela. This 24-kilometre cycling loop starts and ends in Sorihuela and is rated easy. The two loops therefore differ both in activity and length; an approximate duration is also provided for the walking route. Check the conditions and signage before setting out on the cycling route.
Church, hermitage and archaeological traces
The Iglesia de Ntra. Señora de la Asunción was built in the early 17th century. The Ermita del Cristo de Valvanera is located outside Sorihuela. It houses an 18th-century statue of Christ of Valvanera. The Museo Casa de los Pobres is an interpretation centre for the Ruta de los Caños.
The archaeological sites take different forms: the NecrĂłpolis del Maguillo comprises three double and two single tombs carved into the rock. In the El Maguillo area, there is a single tomb carved into a granite block.
Pastures, mountains and a distinctive tree
The landscape around Sorihuela is shaped by pastures for livestock and small vegetable gardens by the river. The higher mountains are rugged and difficult to access, characterised by granite rocks and sparse vegetation; they offer sweeping panoramic views. The landscape thus combines cultivated areas in the surroundings with a distinctly rockier character at higher elevations.
One distinctive tree is the pine known as “Pino Piñonero”, also locally called “El Pino”. It is 17.60 metres tall and has a diameter of 3.61 metres. If precise measurements are important to you, it is advisable to verify these figures locally.
Getting there and planning your visit
Sorihuela is located next to the Ruta de la Plata motorway. Check road conditions and access regulations before travelling. When choosing accommodation, you can also consider whether you would like to focus your stay on the water route, cycling loop, local history or landscape. This makes it easier to include Sorihuela in your travel plans based on specific local points of interest.
Festival and traditional heritage
The Fiesta del Cristo de Valvanera is celebrated in September. It includes a procession to the hermitage, followed by an auction and the distribution of sweets. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, confirm the dates locally.
Antruejo was a pre-Carnival tradition: people would walk through the streets, making as much noise as possible with bells and horns. Ask locally whether this practice still takes place today.
