From the viewpoint at the Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Castillo, the Duero’s meanders come into view: here, the river has carved a 400-meter-deep canyon. The hermitage stands on El Berrocal, where an ancient Castro once stood. The landscape and early settlement history come together at this specific place.

Landscape, Townscape, and Early History

The Iglesia de Santa María is located in the town center. The area’s history goes back even further: Pereña was already inhabited in the Paleolithic, and the rock paintings at Palla Rubia are at least 12,000 years old. Granite dry-stone walls on the slopes are part of the traditional architectural heritage. Walls, springs, and buildings made of dry-laid granite masonry are also part of this heritage.

Choose Hikes by Duration and Destination

For planning purposes, two hikes can be distinguished by their duration and destination. The circular hike from Pereña De La Ribera to Pozo Airón and back is 6 kilometers long and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Stage 35 of the GR 14 runs from Pereña De La Ribera to Masueco; it covers 9.6 kilometers and takes 2 hours and 50 minutes. This makes for a contrast between a shorter circular hike that returns to its starting point and a longer stage with a different endpoint. Since trail conditions can change, check the current conditions before setting out.

The trip to Pozo de los Humos begins by car; you cover the final stretch on foot. The Camino del Pozo de los Humos mountain biking route leads directly to the Pozo de los Humos viewpoint, which offers a view of the impressive Río Uces waterfall. The Camino del Puente Nuevo follows a different route: this mountain biking trail crosses the Rivera over the three-arched stone Puente Nuevo bridge and then follows gently sloping paths back to Pereña. The routes thus differ in their specific destinations and trail features.

Winegrowing and Annual Events

The Camino de los Cuernos starts at kilometer 0 in Pereña and leads to agricultural land, including several vineyards. The town has a long tradition of quality-focused winegrowing; the vineyards along this route offer a direct link between the topic and the trail.

Every year on May 14, a pilgrimage takes place in Pereña to the Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Castillo. The patron saint festivities are held on the first weekend of September, around September 8, in honor of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles. Both dates provide a reference point if you would like to plan your trip around local festivities.
