The Camino de Hierro runs through 20 railway tunnels and across 10 bridges; Tunnel No. 1 is longer than 1.5 kilometres. La Fregeneda combines this railway heritage with the river landscape of the Arribes and a rich cultural history.

River Landscape and Nature Park

La Fregeneda is one of the municipalities in the province of Salamanca within the protected Arribes del Duero Nature Park. The steep Arribes slopes along its northern border and to the southwest are shaped by the Duero and the Águeda rivers. The Mediterranean-continental microclimate provides a natural habitat for almond, orange and olive trees, as well as prickly pear cacti.

Near La Fregeneda, the Duero leaves Castile and LeĂłn; after crossing the border into Portugal, it flows calmly and is navigable once again. Large river cruise ships travelling along the Douro from Porto dock at the Vega TerrĂłn quay. Operators and timetables may change. The Mafeito viewpoint is considered accessible.

Planning the Camino de Hierro

The Camino de Hierro is exclusively for hiking. The short route starts within the municipality of La Fregeneda, covers a little over nine kilometres in total and joins the route at Puente de los Poyos. The starting point for the long route is the old railway station.

There is an essential step to include in your access plans: visitors must validate their ticket at the visitor reception centre at the Vega Terrón quay before being taken to the starting point of the long route at the old railway station or to the start of the short route in La Fregeneda. Tunnel No. 3 may be closed during certain periods because of bats’ hibernation and breeding season. In that case, an alternative route is available. Check the latest access information before your visit.

Getting There and Routes to the Starting Point

Public transport reaches the municipality of La Fregeneda; from there, it is 6.5 kilometres to the starting point of the Camino de Hierro at the Vega TerrĂłn quay. Take this distance into account when planning your journey and check timetables in advance.

The stated road routes run from Salamanca via Vitigudino and Lumbrales on the C-517, from Ciudad Rodrigo via Lumbrales on the SA-324 and C-517, and from Portugal on the N 221. Road conditions and signage may change; check the route before travelling. The routes to the Camino and the journey to the municipality are separate planning considerations: public transport ends in the municipality, while the route to the start of the trail at the quay is still 6.5 kilometres.

Church, Railway and Archaeological Traces

La Fregeneda offers a range of things to explore during your stay beyond the hiking route. The Church of San Marcos Evangelista was begun in the 16th century in the Gothic style and completed in the 18th century in the Baroque style. Other sights include the international railway bridge on the line between La Fuente de San Esteban and Barca d’Alva.

The Arroyo de las Almas archaeological site within the municipality features around 600 engraved motifs, dating from the Upper Palaeolithic to the present day. The oldest engravings include 21 figurative depictions. Their engraving technique suggests a date in the Magdalenian period. A further 137 schematic engravings date from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age.

The Día del Almendro celebrates the blooming almond trees and the ties between Spain and Portugal; the festival has been held in La Fregeneda since the early 1960s. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the dates for the relevant year. This allows you to weigh up the hiking experience on the Camino, the river landscape and the town’s cultural and historical attractions when planning your trip.
