A 14.9-kilometre circular trail passes through El Tornadizo; another, 3.1-kilometre route runs between the village and San Miguel de Valero. There is also a granite church, vineyards as a legacy of the local winemaking tradition, and a municipal picnic area. This lets you consider the landscape, cultural history and an outdoor break as distinct priorities when planning your trip.

Trails and landscape

The Ruta de los Canchales Serranos is a 14.9-kilometre circular trail that passes through El Tornadizo. The total distance helps you plan the length of the walk; the actual walking time depends on your own pace. The area around the route near El Tornadizo includes vineyards, oaks, holm oaks, chestnut trees, rockroses, strawberry trees, olive trees and cherry trees, as well as striking scree fields. As well as the trail through the village, the varied landscape along the route is a key feature.

A route description from 2008 mentions a 3.1-kilometre route from El Tornadizo to San Miguel de Valero. It gives the general information board near the Iglesia de San Gabriel as the starting point; the path follows a traditional track between the two villages. Compared with the circular trail, this is the shorter route, heading towards San Miguel de Valero. Check current trail conditions locally before planning to walk it.

Church, history and festival

The Iglesia de San Gabriel is built of granite. Inside is a 16th-century sculpture of the Virgen del Rosario. If you would like to see the sculpture inside the church, check access in advance.

El Tornadizo was founded during repopulation efforts carried out by the kings of LeĂłn in the 12th and 13th centuries. The patron saint festival in honour of the Virgen del Rosario takes place on the first weekend of September. As the specific programme may vary, check the latest dates and announced events before travelling for the festival.

Winemaking and a break in the village

El Tornadizo preserves vineyards as a legacy of its winemaking tradition and lies within the geographical area of the D.O.P. Sierra de Salamanca. These two details complement each other: vineyards are part of the village landscape, while the designation places it geographically within the Sierra de Salamanca. This allows you to consider winemaking both as a feature of the landscape and in terms of its geographical classification.

The municipal picnic area is near the Iglesia de San Gabriel and the town hall. It has a barbecue, tables and seating for outdoor meals. This gives you a specific place to plan a break during your day, alongside a walk or visit to the village.
