Four Baroque altarpieces in the Iglesia Parroquial de San Pedro, Roman funerary steles in the Museo interpretativo del Duero and eight mountain biking routes give Hinojosa de Duero clear cultural and outdoor highlights. The local cheese-making tradition is another part of the town’s identity. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether church and regional history, cheese or cycling will be your main focus.
Churches, History and Museum
The Iglesia Parroquial de San Pedro dates from the 16th century and has four Baroque altarpieces. The Ermita del Cristo de la Misericordia, also known as the “Parroquia Vieja,” offers a different glimpse of the past: it served as a parish church until around the middle of the 16th century. There is a viewpoint by the Ermita overlooking the Arribes del Duero. If you are interested in architectural history, these offer two distinct points of reference: the date of the parish church and the Ermita’s former role as a parish church.
The Museo interpretativo del Duero houses Roman funerary steles and other archaeological objects. A youth room features collections of miniature cars and trains, items from the former Teleclub and a large model railway. A visit to the museum can be complemented by a tour of a restored former oil mill. The cultural offering thus ranges from archaeological objects to miniatures and a former oil mill.
Historic Routes and Cycling
The Ruta de los Contrabandistas follows a route once used by smugglers to exchange and trade goods. Its name points to a specific historical function: the route is linked to the movement of goods and smuggling. This historical perspective differs from planning a route with distance or difficulty as the main considerations.
Eight mountain biking routes start at the Centro BTT de Hinojosa de Duero, with more than 130 kilometres of signposted trails in total. They are classified by difficulty, providing a basis for comparing routes. The centre provides information about the trail network, its signage and other services. Facilities also include public toilets, a bike-washing station, a small repair workshop and permanent telephone assistance. Before setting out, check trail conditions and signage, as well as the current availability of individual services.
Cheese-Making Tradition and Fair
Hinojosa de Duero has a strong tradition of making Queso Arribes, a product carrying the de GarantĂa quality mark. The cheese is made using traditional methods and raw sheep’s milk. This production method is a specific point of interest if you are interested in regional products.
The Feria Internacional del Queso de Hinojosa de Duero features exhibitions, tastings and workshops. Events may vary from one edition to another. If you would like to plan your trip around the fair, check the programme for the relevant edition. This lets you explore the cheese-making tradition both through the production process and through the fair’s varied activities.
