San Miguel de Valero combines opportunities for hiking with a landscape that reflects its agricultural heritage: vineyards, olive groves, fruit trees and small kitchen gardens surround the village. Terraced landscapes with a long Mediterranean history stretch across the slopes and valley floors. For planning your trip, the trails offer different distances and estimated times; local history and the regional economy add to your understanding of the surrounding area.

Landscape between the Quilamas and Sierra de Francia

The municipality lies between the Sierra de las Quilamas and the Sierra de Francia. The Quilamas is a natural area of landscape and ecological importance. Its Mediterranean woodland includes Pyrenean oaks, strawberry trees, cork oaks, heather and holm oaks. In cool, shady areas, such as La Honfría, you’ll also find species-rich mixed forests of chestnut trees and holly. Pico Cervero lies between San Miguel de Valero and Navarredonda de la Rinconada. At 1,465 metres, it is the highest point in the Sierra de las Quilamas.

Hiking trails of varying distances

The Ruta Norte de los pueblos runs from San Miguel de Valero to Linares de RiofrĂo. It is about 5.5 kilometres long and takes around two and a half hours to walk; the difficulty level is low to moderate. The Ruta de la Miel o de los Valles offers a shorter route: the section between San Miguel de Valero and Valero is about 2.4 kilometres long and takes around an hour. The route continues beyond Valero to the confluence of the Quilamas and the AlagĂłn; the distance and time given refer to the section between the two villages.

For longer hikes, the Ruta Noroeste de la Sierra Mayor connects San Miguel de Valero with La Honfría and Pico Cervero. Its shorter variant is about 14.6 kilometres long, and the longer one about 15.4 kilometres. The Ruta a Castil de Cabras also starts in San Miguel de Valero and follows trails towards Pocilgas de la Novata–Quilamas. It is about 11.2 kilometres long and forms part of the Ruta de los Caminos Históricos de Entresierras.

The signposted Camino de los Trasiegos is about 3.5 kilometres long and descends through dense oak and chestnut forests on the slopes; along the way, there are views of the Quilamas valley. A distinctive threshing floor made of granite slabs lies on this trail, where barley was winnowed. The name Camino de los Trasiegos recalls the days when goods, including honey and pollen, were transported and traded.

Church, beekeeping and local traditions

The parish church, Iglesia Parroquial de San Miguel, dates from the 17th century and preserves a Mudejar wooden ceiling. Beekeeping is also part of the village’s history: it has been part of the local economy since the 18th century. The honey industry involves many beekeepers and a cooperative.

Another historic hiking trail leads from San Miguel de Valero to Monte del Castillo. There you’ll find what are believed to be the remains of the castle of Count Don Rodrigo, associated with the legend of Queen Quilama. The patron saint celebrations in honour of San Miguel Arcángel take place on 29 September. The programme includes a parade, a Mass, a procession, a floral offering, novilladas and an evening verbena; individual events may vary.
