Endrinal combines traditional architecture with a landscape that varies to the north and south of the town. It also has traces of rural life and trails leading to distinctive geological formations. You can tailor your trip according to whether you are more interested in local history, the landscape or a hike.

On the way to Endrinal, the route crosses the tertiary geological formation of El Lombo. The wetter soils there support meadows with ash trees. North of the town, the landscape includes oaks and holm oaks; to the south, there are meadows and grain fields. These differences give the surroundings several distinctive features: tree cover in the north, and open fields and meadows in the south. Near Las Pozas, a short detour of about 100 metres leads to La Chopa de las Huertas, a striking Castilian poplar.

Townscape and rural traditions

Endrinal preserves traditional architecture characteristic of Entresierras. The town’s history can be seen particularly clearly in individual buildings: the Ermita del Mensegal dates from the 16th century and has a single-nave layout. The parish church of San Pedro has three naves. According to some studies, it may have been built over an older building that had a crypt beneath the present-day sacristy.

The Museo Etnográfico is housed in the Casa de la Cultura Tradicional de Endrinal and presents the typical uses of a traditional home. The wooden potro, located about 50 metres outside the town, offers another glimpse of working with livestock. It was used to restrain animals during treatment and shoeing. Traditionally, the young men and children of the town gathered at Prao Cabildo for a shared snack on the feast day of San Blas and the day of Hornazo.

Public spaces also preserve traces of earlier customs. Plaza del Herradero, next to the Ermita del Humilladero, was formerly used to brand cattle. The bullring beside the Ermita del Mensegal has been documented since the 15th century. An ethnographic study from 1987 also notes traces of a pastoral enclosure at the bullring. The festivals of San Juan, San Pedro and Cristo del Humilladero combine mass and a romerĂa with bullfighting events in Plaza del Mensegal. Traditional games include climbing a pole and a contest to throw hams and shoulders of pork.

Trails and landscape around Endrinal

The route to the Ollas de la Sapa follows a well-marked rural track that forms part of the GR-181 “Ruta de los Caminos Históricos de Entresierras.” A section of this trail described in 2014 runs parallel to the Alagón River. The Ollas themselves are almost spherical depressions in a rocky riverbed. They were formed by the erosion of hard rock fragments spun around by swirling water. Here, the focus is therefore not on vegetation or historic buildings, but on the formation of the riverbed.

The remains of the medieval settlement of Monte Alcaide, dated to the 6th to 8th centuries AD, also lie on the route to the Ollas de la Sapa. A route description from 2014 gives the hiking stage from Endrinal to MonleĂłn as 8.2 kilometres long. It describes the trail as accessible to all groups of people as far as the Ermita del Mensegal; some sections beyond that are described as more difficult. Before setting out, check the stated distance and trail conditions against the current signage.

When planning your trip, you can distinguish between the different themes: El Lombo represents the soils and ash-tree meadows along the way to Endrinal; the northern and southern surroundings showcase different vegetation and land use; and the Ollas de la Sapa highlight the geology. In the town itself, the church, ermita, museum and traditional squares offer different insights into its architectural and everyday history. You can choose the focus that best suits your interest in heritage, landscape or hiking.
