Morille is best explored through its art and cultural history. Its cultural profile includes a museum-mausoleum for avant-garde works, sculptures along the Arroyo de los Lienzos, the Espacio Serzo Morille, dedicated to Serzo’s work, and its connection to the Vía de la Plata. This gives the town several distinct ways to enjoy a cultural stay: contemporary art, a historical collection, a religious building and cultural events. Visitors choosing Morille as their destination can tailor their stay to these interests.

Art and the Vía de la Plata

The Cementerio de Arte de Morille is a museum-mausoleum established at the initiative of artists Domingo Sánchez Blanco and Javier Utray. Its purpose is to bury works recognized for their artistic merit and/or pieces directly connected with avant-garde art. Here, avant-garde art is thus linked to the idea of burial. Hanging various kinds of ties is also associated with the Cementerio de Arte.

Los Desplazamientos takes a different form: the work by Ángel Mateos Bernal, a sculptor from Salamanca, consists of sculptures along the Arroyo de los Lienzos, opposite the CEVMO. The full name, Centro de Promoción y Estudios de la Vía de la Plata y del Viaje, refers to a cultural center. Its remit includes promoting, interpreting and researching the Vía de la Plata as a network of routes and resources. Morille is also the last town pilgrims pass through on this route before Salamanca. Morille’s connection with art is therefore linked to a clearly defined perspective on the pilgrimage route.

The Espacio Serzo Morille is in the center of town, at Plaza de la Constitución. Designed as a kind of “living museum,” it brings together a significant part of Serzo’s artistic work. Its aim is to connect avant-garde art with an environment shaped by rural and popular ways of life. Compared with the Cementerio de Arte, the emphasis shifts: there, the burial of art defines the concept; here, the focus is on the artwork and its place in a rural setting.

Collection and religious building

The collection at the Museo del Comercio y la Industria de Morille – Colección Jaime San Román has a different focus, too. It includes some of the objects and documents that entrepreneur Jaime San Román (1911–1997) gathered over the course of his career. The museum can be visited only by prior appointment, so this should be arranged before visiting.

The parish church of El Salvador adds an older religious building to the picture: it is of Romanesque origin and was built in the 16th century. There is no admission charge during liturgical services. The museum and church therefore have different visiting arrangements, which are relevant when planning a visit.

Cultural events

The PAN Festival offers another fixed point for planning a trip. It usually takes place on the third weekend of July, although the exact dates may vary from one edition to the next. It brings together poets, artists, publishers, performers and thinkers from Spain, Latin America and Europe. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check the dates for the relevant edition. In 2023, the Feria de los Dulces de las Monjas in Morille held its twelfth edition.
