Between settlement history and the Huebra landscape, Bermellar offers several distinct themes to consider when planning your trip. The castros and archaeological sites provide different historical points of reference, while the bridge, church and rock paintings offer their own cultural destinations. Practical planning calls for paying attention to the specific routes: the entrance to Las Merchanas is reached by a final stretch on foot, and a Huebra route is classified as highly difficult.

Castros and historical periods

The remains of Castro de El Puerto bear witness to Iron Age settlement in Bermellar. The castro dates to around 500 BC. The archaeological site of Las Arañas represents a later period: it shows that settlement continued in Roman times. This gives you two distinct points of reference in time—the Iron Age settlement and its continuation into the Roman period.

Castro de Las Merchanas is another archaeological destination. It lies in the Arribes del Duero Nature Park, on the border with the municipality of Bermellar. From the village, take the CV-16 country road in the direction of Bermellar; at kilometre 4, turn right onto a signposted path. After driving 2.4 km, the last 700 m to the entrance must be covered on foot. Take this walking section into account when planning your visit, along with the road directions.

Another archaeological point of interest in the municipality is Castro de El Castillo de Saldañuela. It lies on the opposite bank of the Huebra from El Castillo. The parish church of Santa María Magdalena and the rock paintings at Risco de Bermellar are also among the places worth seeing in Bermellar. You can therefore distinguish between settlement remains, sacred architecture and rock art when choosing what to explore.

The Huebra landscape and routes

Arribes del Yeltes/Huebra is two kilometres from Bermellar. This distance gives the landscape a concrete place in your plans: you can consider it as a separate focus alongside the historical and cultural destinations.

Puente Resbala crosses the Huebra, and grain mills have been preserved by the bridge. This spot therefore brings together a structure spanning the river and the preserved mills as historical points of interest.

A 2021 excursion description classifies the route along the Huebra by Castro de Bermellar as highly difficult. An excursion description dated 25 April 2021 recounts a route along the Huebra from the area around Castro de Bermellar to a point close to the former settlement, or “Castillo,” of Malgarrida.

The information about Las Merchanas and the Huebra route helps with different planning questions: for Las Merchanas, the final stretch on foot is specified in exact figures; for the route along the Huebra, the high difficulty rating is the key consideration. Take both points into account when making your choice, rather than treating the access distance as an indication of how difficult a route is.
