In Sancti-Spíritus, themes range from the parish church’s Mudéjar ensemble to water-filled Chabarcos and local festival traditions. This lets you consider cultural history, nature watching and activities such as the BTT-Cicloturista as different reasons for planning your trip.

Church and early history

The parish church was built around 1475 and has been preserved and restored. The diocese handed it over to the town council of Sancti-Spíritus. Its Mudéjar ensemble includes a horseshoe arch separating the apse from the nave. The construction period, restoration and handover to the town council point to different chapters in the town’s history. The apse forms the end of the church interior; the nave is the elongated main space for the congregation.

The Neolithic settlement site of Abrigo de Camaces is located near Sancti-Spíritus and was designated an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1983. Together with the parish church, built around 1475, these represent two distinct historical periods: a Neolithic settlement site and a 15th-century building.

Rivers and Chabarcos

The Gavilanes crosses the municipal area, while the Yeltes touches it in the east. The difference lies in their courses: the Gavilanes is notable for crossing the municipal area, while the Yeltes is associated with its eastern part.

Chabarcos are water-filled hollows. Locally, they are used for recreation, swimming, fishing and birdwatching. Thus, water-based leisure and nature watching are different uses of the same landscape feature.

Cycling and local traditions

The BTT-Cicloturista is considered a family-friendly cycle tour, not a race. Its route covers about 31 kilometres from Las Encinas to the municipal swimming pools in Sancti-Spíritus. As route details may change from one edition to another, check the information for the relevant edition when planning your trip.

The local Corpus Christi festival includes bullfighting events. A relatively recent pilgrimage on the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel runs from the Iglesia Vieja in Sancti-Spíritus to Fuenterroble de Arriba; Mass is held in the chapel there. Local tambourine players traditionally accompanied weddings and religious festivals. These customs offer insight into the town’s different religious and festive forms of expression.

Livestock-farming history and getting there

The Carreros de Fuenterroble estate includes a house museum devoted to the history of livestock farming in Salamanca over the past 150 years. This adds livestock farming as a distinct theme alongside church architecture and archaeological heritage. Check the museum’s current visiting arrangements before your visit.

The A-62 runs close to Sancti-Spíritus. The railway line is about one kilometre from the town; the station is not in operation. If you are considering travelling by train, check current services and timetables in advance.
