La Hoya lies at an altitude of 1,242 metres in the Sierra de Béjar. Two distinct highlights can help you plan your trip: winter sports at the Estación de Esquí de la Covatilla, and trails, views and traditional architecture in the town. The ski station is located within the municipality of La Hoya, at an altitude of over 2,000 metres. Its operating season can vary, so plan snow activities with the season in mind.

Altitude and Landscape

The altitude offers views of many places in the province of Salamanca and nearby mountains. Part of the LIC Riberas del Río Tormes y Afluentes (ES4150085) also lies within the municipality. The views across the province and a designated protected area are both among La Hoya’s scenic features.

Skiing and Snow Activities

The Estación Sierra de Béjar–La Covatilla offers children and adults a day of skiing in the countryside. At the Parque de Nieve, visitors can go sledding and play in the snow. Operating seasons and rules may vary; check the current conditions before planning these activities.

The snow park has 15 features, three jump lines and three difficulty levels. These figures give a concrete idea of its layout, which may change. If you are interested in this area, check the facility’s latest information before your visit.

Circular Route and Long-Distance Trail

The circular route “Paseo por Vallejera de Riofrío, La Hoya y Navacarros” is 7 kilometres long and classed as easy. As a loop, it is a different option from the GR 10, a long-distance trail that passes through the municipality of La Hoya.

The GR 10 enters the province of Salamanca from San Bartolomé de Béjar in the province of Ávila. From the town of La Hoya, it climbs through oak woodland to the road leading to the La Covatilla ski slope. The trail thus marks the transition between the provinces and follows a specific stretch of countryside near La Hoya.

Townscape and Traditional Architecture

Traditional architecture can be seen in a range of details. Wide roof overhangs protect houses from snow. Large galleries with wooden balconies are used for drying cured meats. Other examples include thick stone walls and granite-block surrounds around openings and at the corners of buildings. Together, these features offer insight into the town’s building style and the practical purposes it serves.

The Iglesia del Espíritu Santo is a small parish church in La Hoya, dedicated to the Holy Spirit. The town’s history can also be put into context: its founding is linked to medieval repopulation. The church, homes and historical background offer different ways to get to know La Hoya beyond its winter sports.

Getting to La Hoya

Roads connect La Hoya with the former national highway from Salamanca and with the province of Ávila. There is also a nearby connection to the Ruta de la Plata motorway. As road conditions may change, check them before setting out. When planning your trip, you can match your journey with your interests in the area—for example, a circular route, the GR 10 or activities at the ski station.
