San Martín Del Castañar reveals itself through the town’s architecture, notable evidence of its history and trails in the natural park. Highlights range from the church and castle to Roman structures, the Asentadero–Bosque de los Espejos circular trail and a wine experience in a historic cellar. This variety of options is useful when planning your trip: you can focus on the townscape and architectural history, or choose nature and wine as additional highlights. A viewpoint in the castle tower offers a different perspective from the 9.2-kilometre circular route.

Townscape and Architectural History

San Martín Del Castañar was declared a historic-artistic ensemble by Royal Decree 3233/1982 of 12 November 1982. Traditional architecture also shapes the town: because building space was limited, buildings were constructed upwards. Deeply overhanging roofs narrow the streets and protect house walls from heavy rainfall. This style of construction combines a distinctive feature of the townscape with practical protection for the houses.

The Church of San Martín de Tours was built between the 13th and 15th centuries and was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1981. Its features include a Baroque altarpiece, a Mudéjar coffered ceiling, Ionic columns and a portico. These varied structural and decorative features offer a tangible insight into the church’s architectural history, without any one period defining the entire building.

The square around the Portalón also tells the story of the town’s former uses. It is bordered by the old schools, an inn, a tavern, the former bishop’s palace and private homes. The Portalón allowed the San Martín council to conveniently watch the events and festivities held there. Another historic feature is the Plaza de Toros: it is considered Spain’s second-oldest bullring, after the Plaza de Toros de El Castañar in Béjar (Salamanca).

The 15th-century castle was restored and converted into the Interpretation Centre for the Sierras de Béjar and Francia Biosphere Reserve. A viewpoint in the castle tower looks out over both mountain ranges and the town centre. In San Martín Del Castañar, architectural details and views of the town and landscape each offer a different way to explore.

Roman Road and Circular Trails

The Roman Bridge is connected to the Roman road that leads to the Parque Municipal. The road continues to the Ermita del Socorro and the Ermita del Humilladero. Along the route are stone crosses that were once used for the Stations of the Cross. The Ermita del Humilladero stands on the Roman road and has six late Gothic pillars with octagonal cross-sections. This combination of bridge, road and chapels makes the historic route a destination in its own right for exploring the town.

For a longer walk, consider the Asentadero–Bosque de los Espejos: the circular trail is 9.2 kilometres long, passes through San Martín Del Castañar, Sequeros and Las Casas del Conde, and runs through the Las Batuecas–Sierra de Francia Natural Park. Check trail conditions before setting out. The distance is a useful planning reference, but on its own says nothing about current trail conditions.

Another way to discover the region’s distinctive features is the Pasadizo de los Porqués. It introduces geological, floral and faunal topics as well as local crafts, traditions and legends. It thus complements the architectural history with a perspective on nature and local culture, while the circular trail offers a clearly defined hiking option through its distance and the communities it passes through.

Wine and Local Traditions

The Bodega Medieval de San Martín Del Castañar offers an immersive tour exploring the history and traditions of wine and its artisanal production. The setting is a 16th-century stone cellar. The experience described includes a tasting of wines made from the Rufete grape, a variety native and exclusive to this area. If you plan to take part, check availability and tasting details before booking; both may change. This wine tour differs distinctly from the buildings and trails: its focus is the tradition of winemaking and the grape variety.
