The Ermita de la Virgen del Cueto gives Matilla de los Caños del Río a distinctive cultural and historical landmark: it stands on a hill and dates from the 17th century. A signposted public dirt track leads from the CL-512 to the Ermita, about three kilometres away. This is an approximate distance; check the route conditions before setting out, as they may change. This makes it possible to treat the visit as a distinct focus on the building, its location and access.
The Ermita and Miliario 53
Miliario 53 was reused as a column in the arcades of the Ermita. The 17th-century building and the reused stone are two distinct cultural and historical points of interest at the same Ermita. If this piece is indeed a milestone, it would be the most recent epigraphic evidence of the Vía de la Plata in the province of Salamanca.
Other traces of local history
The local history also includes the surviving canal of a former fulling mill and the ruins of an old castle. Archaeological work at the castle ruins uncovered an area that was probably used as an armoury; finds included weapons, knee guards and breastplates.
The cultural heritage also includes a dance performance in honour of the Virgen del Cueto, accompanied by tambourines and dulzainas. It complements the history of buildings and finds with music and dance.
Campo Charro and its landscape
Matilla de los Caños del Río is considered one of the important places in Campo Charro. The landscape is characterised by holm oak pastures where fighting bulls are raised. This regional context broadens the focus beyond individual buildings: it describes a cultural landscape whose characteristic pastures and livestock farming are part of the region’s identity. This offers a different travel focus from the specific history of the building and objects at the Ermita.
Streams and occasional brooks cross the municipality’s rolling landscape and flow into the Arganda. Together, these waterways add the character of the local landscape to the regional picture of holm oak pastures.
Sporting events with specific dates
Sporting events also provide a dated connection to the area. The adult race in the Carrera por el Campo del Toro Bravo, held on 24 March 2024, covered 8,959 metres and started at Plaza del Escultor Venancio Blanco. Editions of the Marcha BTT Matilla de los Caños del Río were announced for 21 August 2022 and 20 August 2023. This places one completed adult race alongside two announced mountain bike event dates, with different statuses.
Which focus suits your search?
When looking for a holiday rental, you can first decide which focus you would like to shape your stay: the history of the buildings and the town, or the landscape of Campo Charro and the Arganda. These topics operate at different levels—specific historical traces on the one hand, and the region’s pastures and waterways on the other. This can help you choose the destination based on the interests you would like to prioritise during your stay.
