Fossils of Europe’s earliest humans, dating back almost a million years, have been preserved in the caves of the Sierra de Atapuerca. The archaeological site was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. Visitor reception centers are located in the municipalities of Ibeas de Juarros and Atapuerca; check the visiting options before your trip.

On the trails: from the pilgrimage route to the gorge

The Camino de Santiago Francés runs for almost 400 kilometers through Castile and León, from Redecilla del Camino to La Laguna in the municipality of Vega de Valcarce. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it passes through the provinces of Burgos, Palencia and León in fifteen stages. You can travel the route on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. Its length, stages and several possible ways of getting around make it a different undertaking from a single circular walk.

The Lago Sanabria – Senda 6 Cascada de Sotillo route is a six-kilometer circular trail through well-preserved woodland, taking about three hours. Compared with the Camino Francés, this is a shorter, clearly defined walk with a stated duration. This makes it possible to compare two very different ways of exploring without assuming a fixed itinerary.

In the Hoces del Río Duratón, deep gorges carved into limestone shape the landscape; the area is home to Europe’s largest colony of griffon vultures. Several trails of varying lengths explore both the gorge and the riverside forest. Length and landscape are therefore two practical points of reference when choosing a route.

In the Cañón del Río Lobos, the Senda del Río runs for almost 25 kilometers between Ucero and Hontoria del Pinar. Access to the canyon is free for visitors, and a nature interpretation center is located near Ucero. Seasonal conditions can affect some sections of the route; check conditions before setting out.

Traces of mining and architecture

Las Médulas offers a different way of reading the landscape: this Roman gold-mining site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and covers more than 2,000 hectares. The archaeological area includes mines, spoil heaps, dams and canals. The water power used in gold mining connects the history of the technology with the surviving features of the mining area.

In Burgos, the cathedral is a fully realized Gothic cathedral with chapels, a cloister and ancillary buildings. Salamanca offers a different architectural focus: its historic center brings together important Romanesque, Gothic, Moorish, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. The Plaza Mayor is one of Europe’s most significant 18th-century urban ensembles.

A closer look at the University of Salamanca reveals individual artistic details. The Edificio de Escuelas Mayores has a Plateresque-style façade. The painting “Cielo de Salamanca,” attributed to Fernando Gallego, is located in the Patio de Escuelas Menores. The university continues to use its historic buildings and outstanding spaces and welcomes visitors daily; check the current visitor arrangements before your visit.

More discoveries

Siega Verde also offers different ways to visit: options include guided tours and an outdoor escape game. As the visitor program may change, check the options in advance. At MUSAC in León, the facilities include five exhibition halls, a project space, an event hall, an educational workshop and a library. The facilities therefore extend beyond the exhibition halls.

Those who would also like to discover Castile and León through its wine can find wineries offering tastings led by experts along the Ribera del Duero Wine Route. Providers and availability may change, so check in advance which tastings are offered during your visit. The range of experiences spans archaeological sites and architecture, trails, exhibitions and wine.
