A 16th-century Mudéjar coffered ceiling, local festivals and circular mountain biking routes of around 10 to 32 kilometres offer different ways to explore Cristóbal. The town lies between the Sierra de Béjar and the Sierra de Francia. Culture, scenery and cycling each give your trip a different focus—and can be balanced to suit your plans.

Church, townscape and trails

The parish church of San Martín de Tours brings together architectural elements from different periods; most date from the 16th and 17th centuries. Its main chapel has a 16th-century Mudéjar coffered ceiling. The cornices are also worth a look: locals interpret the zoomorphic figures there as wolves. This interpretation has earned Cristóbal the nickname “pueblo de los lobos” (village of the wolves).

The town’s traditional houses have two storeys. In the past, animals were kept on the lower floor, while the upper floor served as living quarters. On the edge of town stands the Ermita del Humilladero, also known as the Ermita del Cristo de la Pasión, which is considered an important building. The names and location can help you decide which sights to include in your visit.

The landscape is also part of Cristóbal’s character: its forests are made up mainly of chestnut and oak trees, along with ash and holm oaks. As a nature reserve, Cristóbal provides a habitat for numerous wild species and is home to abundant, diverse flora. Otters have returned to the Sangusín and the Valhondo, Pinosa and Chorreras streams. If you prefer to explore on foot, you can discover traces of earlier civilisations on the trails around the town.

Choose cycling routes by distance and difficulty

The Ruta BTT Entresierras 1 is a circular route of around 10 kilometres with a moderate difficulty level. By comparison, the also-circular Ruta BTT Entresierras 2 is longer, at around 20.5 kilometres, and challenging. It starts and ends in Cristóbal and passes through vineyards within the D.O.P. “Sierra de Salamanca”. The distances and difficulty ratings offer concrete points of comparison when choosing between the two routes.

For a longer challenge, the difficult, 32-kilometre Ruta BTT de los Dos Valles connects Cristóbal with Valdefuentes de Sangusín, San Esteban de la Sierra and Santibáñez de la Sierra. The circular route runs through the valleys of the Sangusín and Alagón. When planning, consider not only the greater distance but also that the route includes several towns and two valleys. Check the current trail conditions before setting out.

The Centro BTT Entresierras is located in Cristóbal’s former school buildings. It has changing rooms, showers and tools for minor repairs. The Centro BTT also connects the town to a 183-kilometre cycling route divided into nine sections and running within the Reserva de la Biosfera Sierras de Béjar y Francia. Check before your visit whether the facilities described are currently available. Cristóbal is also a member of the Asociación Ruta del Vino Sierra de Francia; the wines promoted there belong to the D.O.P. Sierra de Salamanca.

Festivals and shared traditions

The patron saint festival of the Santísimo Cristo takes place in September. The procession goes from the hermitage to the church and then back again. On 11 November, San Martín de Tours is celebrated with a mass and a community meal, whose main course is chopped or stewed pork. The annual celebration also includes the exchange of Cristóbal’s traditional cloak with representatives from other nearby towns.

The Fiesta del Emigrante takes place in mid-August. It was established for the time when many residents who have moved away return to Cristóbal for their holidays. Lunes de Aguas also remains a living tradition: on Easter Sunday, people eat hornazos outdoors with friends and acquaintances. These different dates and occasions add their own cultural and culinary highlights to the year; check the latest festival dates when planning a specific trip.

Two guided routes are usually held in Cristóbal in spring. The Ruta Sangusín is followed by a shared meal. The Ruta Cabeza de los Negros is the longer of the two and usually starts at 12 noon. As these are customary or scheduled seasonal activities, it is advisable to confirm in advance that they will take place.
