El Cabaco offers two distinct points of interest: Las Cavenes, an archaeological site, and Peña de Francia, with its hilltop sanctuary, chapels and views. There are also marked trails to the former mining area and hikes of varying lengths. When planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus on culture, mountain scenery or both.
Archaeological remains and architecture
Las Cavenes in El Cabaco is designated a Site of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) in the archaeological site category. Marked trails lead from the Centro de Interpretación de la Minería Romana del Oro de Las Cavenes to the former mining area. The center's exhibition includes reproductions of tools, models, audiovisual media, archaeological objects and interactive games. The center also offers accessible information panels in Braille, audio guides in Spanish and English, a guided tour in sign language, and materials in Easy Read. If you would like to use any of these formats, check availability in advance.
The monastery of the Franciscan nuns of the Third Order Regular of Porta Coeli in El Zarzoso, within the municipality of El Cabaco, is also designated a Site of Cultural Interest in the monument category. Its church is a single-nave Gothic building dating from the 15th century. Architectural details include simple star-pattern ribbed vaults.
Peña de Francia: summit and views
Peña de Francia is a 1,727 m-high mountain in the Sierra de Francia, in the south of Salamanca province; its summit lies within the municipality of El Cabaco. The Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia is located at the summit. The summit complex includes three outdoor chapels, including the Capilla de la Blanca. From the top, the views extend across numerous nearby villages and the entire Campo Charro plain. You may also encounter mountain goats on Peña de Francia.
Hiking trails by length and distance
The linear El Cabaco-Peña de Francia PRSA-8 hiking route is 8.7 km long, involves 760 m of ascent and is of moderate difficulty. The El Cabaco-Nava de Francia mycological trail is 13.7 km long, involves 220 m of ascent and is also rated moderate. A shorter, 2 km variant runs near El Cabaco. These different distances can help you plan how much hiking to fit into your day.
The mycological trail passes through extensive holm oak dehesas, crosses rivers and damp valleys, and runs through dense pine forest in the Las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia Nature Park. Along the way, it offers a glimpse into traditional charcoal-makers' paths and Roman gold mining. Check route information and seasonal trail conditions before setting out: details for the PRSA-8 may be updated, and conditions on the mycological trail can change with the seasons.
Landscape, tradition and getting there
El Cabaco lies in the upper basin of the Río Yeltes, at the foot of Peña de Francia. The village is part of the Las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia Nature Park and a biosphere reserve. The Charro traditional dress is also part of local heritage, including jewelry such as necklaces, earrings and chains. The men's dress includes the botón charro, which represents a rosary with ten spherical beads.
El Cabaco is served by the Mogarraz-La Alberca / Salamanca bus route. If you plan to travel by bus, check the current timetable before your trip.
