La Alberca combines a distinctive local history with cultural and scenic discoveries. Plaza Mayor is the town’s social centre; the Valle de las Batuecas, with its protected cultural landscape, also lies within the municipality. This offers different focuses for a stay: architecture and customs in the town, prehistoric remains in the valley, and nature and art along the Camino de las Raíces.

Plaza Mayor, the Church and the House Museum

Plaza Mayor has a square layout and is surrounded by arcades with columns. La Alberca was the first rural settlement in Spain to be declared a National Historic Monument. Its historic character is also reflected in the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la AsunciĂłn, the town’s most representative religious building, which was constructed in the 18th century. Its remarkable pulpit, made of polychrome stone, dates from the 16th century. The church and pulpit therefore represent different historical periods.

Another way to explore the town’s history is the Casa Museo Satur Juanela. It is located in one of the few traditional albercana houses that have survived in largely unchanged condition. Original furniture and household items preserved in the house offer an impression of how people lived in the Sierra de Francia until just a few decades ago. The focus here is on homes and everyday life, while the square and church draw attention to architecture and religious art.

Customs and cultural heritage

Every day at dusk, the Moza de Ánimas makes her way through La Alberca. A woman rings a bell, sings a psalmody and prays. The sacramental mystery play La Loa has medieval origins, and its roles are performed by local residents. Traditional clothing also reflects several historical periods: its roots go back to the Middle Ages, while its present-day form follows patterns from the 18th and 19th centuries.

These examples show different aspects of local culture: a daily custom, a mystery play with medieval origins, and clothing whose present-day form was shaped by later centuries. Anyone interested in La Alberca’s history can consider these living traditions, alongside the buildings and house museum, as a distinct part of the town’s character.

The Valle de las Batuecas

The Valle de las Batuecas lies within the municipality of La Alberca and is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest in the Historic Site category. Steep slopes and lush vegetation shape the landscape. The valley contains a large group of prehistoric paintings with a naturalistic style. They date from the Middle to the Late Neolithic and extend into the Chalcolithic. The valley thus combines a striking landscape with a significant archaeological heritage.

The Convento del Desierto Carmelitano stands at the entrance to the Valle de las Batuecas. It was built at the end of the 16th century as a place for secluded, hermitic life and expanded in the 17th and 18th centuries. Its history adds another cultural focus to the valley, though it belongs to a markedly different period from the prehistoric paintings.

Nature Park, Forest Route and Tree-Top Adventure Course

La Alberca is located in an area that is part of the Las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia Nature Park. The Casa del Parque de Las Batuecas - Sierra de Francia is in the town and provides information for visitors to the nature park. Its exhibition includes dioramas, models, information panels and audiovisual materials, including content specially developed for children. It provides information about plant species in the park, such as lichens, mosses and ferns, as well as the mammals and birds that live there.

The Camino de las Raíces begins in La Alberca and runs through a forest of oaks and chestnuts. Artistic installations along the route evoke the town’s cultural roots and collective memory. Here, forest scenery and art come to the fore together. A different kind of activity is offered by the Las Batuecas adventure park in the trees on the outskirts of town: its five courses comprise a total of 87 challenges, or tree-top stations. These include zip lines, lianas, various bridges, ladders and nets among the treetops.

The different themes are easy to distinguish: the historic town centre focuses on architecture, the museum and customs; the valley combines landscape and archaeological remains, while the Camino brings together forest and artistic installations. The tree-top course adds an activity among the treetops to the mix. Depending on what interests you most, you can focus on one of these themes or explore several aspects of La Alberca side by side.
