The Allier River is 420 kilometres long and is considered one of Europe’s last wild rivers. In the valleys of the Allier and Loire, meanders, side channels, gravel and sandy beaches, islands and floodplain forests alternate. The landscape takes on very different characters: alongside the rivers are gorges and wetlands. The gorges of the Sioule, Bouble and Haut Cher are considered well-preserved natural areas; steep slopes and rocky escarpments define them.
River Landscapes, Wetlands and Forest
The peat bogs of the Montagne bourbonnaise are among the area’s distinctive natural environments. Their rich flora includes rare plants such as bog rosemary and sundew. The natural areas of Allier can also be explored in various ways: the département has 18 managed Espaces naturels sensibles, most of which are open to the public for independent exploration. Activities available there include hiking, cycling and mountain biking, as well as climbing, canoeing, paragliding and fishing.
One specific place to visit is Les Gorges de la Bouble, a natural site managed by the département in Chantelle and Deneuille-les-Chantelle. Those looking for hiking trails and other forms of gentle mobility can consult Allier’s PDIPR directory of rural paths. It supports both permanent routes and organised walks. Alongside individual natural sites, there are therefore various ways to get outdoors in the area.
The Forêt de Tronçais offers something distinctive: it is Allier’s largest state forest and is considered Europe’s first oak forest. The trees grow up to 30 metres tall. Visitor information in the forest is organised around five main areas. Meanwhile, rapids and cascades shape the Vallon du Barbenan, a mountain stream with ecological diversity and a range of habitats.
Discover Architectural History and Culture
In Moulins, the Musée Anne-de-Beaujeu brings together architectural history and a diverse collection. The museum is housed in a pavilion of the ducal palace, considered one of the first examples of Renaissance architecture and decoration in France. Its collections include around 20,000 objects relating to art, archaeology and natural history. Another historic landmark in Moulins is the Tour de l’Horloge dite Jacquemart, completed in 1408.
Souvigny also tells a story of a long religious history: it was one of Cluny’s five daughter sites and became one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in the Western world, centred around the tombs of Saints Mayeul and Odilo. Charroux offers another aspect of the region’s heritage. It is the only village in Allier to hold the Les Plus Beaux Villages de France label.
Vichy is one of eleven European spa towns included in the UNESCO World Heritage property The Great Spa Towns of Europe. Allier is also home to three Bourbonnais thermal resorts: Bourbon-l’Archambault, Néris-les-Bains and Vichy. Together with the historic sites, these examples show the variety of cultural heritage and thermal traditions in the département.
More Experiences and Practical Information
For a day out combining different kinds of attractions, Le PAL brings together an amusement park and a zoo across 40 hectares of natural surroundings. Paléopolis is dedicated to dinosaurs and palaeontology, with exhibitions and activities for families. Typical Allier products such as pâté aux pommes de terre and pompe aux grattons are among the local culinary discoveries.
Moulins-sur-Allier is served by Intercités trains on the Paris-Bercy–Clermont-Ferrand route. Check the current timetable before travelling. From Moulins station, it is about 800 metres to the tourist office and historic centre. This practical information adds a specific arrival point to the selection of nature and cultural attractions, without prescribing a fixed route through the département.
