In Châtelus, hiking trails meet local and school history, as well as the production of walnut oil. The Circuit des Faures offers views stretching to the Puys d’Auvergne; at the Musée de l’École, writing with a dip pen at historic school desks is part of the visit. At the Moulin Gribory, private individuals can watch oil being made from their walnut or hazelnut kernels by appointment. This offers different options, from landscapes and history to a hands-on craft experience.

Hike and explore the town

The Circuit des Faures offers views of the plains to the north and the mountains to the south, stretching as far as the Puys d’Auvergne. The route leads to the Borne-Romaine crossroads. If you are looking for a circular hike with a stated distance, the “La borne romaine – PR n°29” route is 8.0 km long and starts at Place de l’Église in Châtelus. The hikes described here therefore differ in their stated features: the Circuit des Faures for its views and route to the crossroads, and the PR n°29 for its length and circular route.

You can also explore the town on the self-guided “Châtelus par le chemin des écoliers” walk, which has an information board. It passes the Church of Saint-Cyr, dating from 1905. This town walk offers a different focus from the two hikes: it combines exploring the village independently with a stop at the church. Together, the routes offer different perspectives on Châtelus without requiring you to choose just one.

School history at the Musée de l’École

The Musée de l’École recreates an old classroom in the former village school, built in 1880. It displays numerous documents and pieces of furniture dating from 1830 onward. There is also a hands-on activity: visitors can write with a Sergent-Major nib at authentic school desks. The combination of the room, historical objects and a writing exercise makes the visit especially vivid; you encounter school history not only through documents, but also through a recreated activity.

In 2026, the museum is open daily year-round, but only by reservation made at least 48 hours in advance. Allow for this notice period when planning your visit and check the reservation policy beforehand, as it may change.

Castle remains and history in the townscape

The Maison des Dîmes is a former 12th-century guardhouse and the only surviving part of Châtelus’s former feudal castle. You can view its exterior free of charge. The historic castle stood on a rocky promontory topped by a feudal motte and commanded the Barbenan valley. The Maison des Dîmes thus represents a surviving part of the castle complex; the motte and its position above the valley form part of the broader historical context.

The “Châtelus par le chemin des écoliers” walk lets you include the Church of Saint-Cyr in a tour of the town, while the Maison des Dîmes represents a much older layer of history. In town, you can therefore encounter both the church dating from 1905 and a monument from the 12th century. The Maison’s visit is clearly limited to its freely accessible exterior.

Walnut oil and flour from the Moulin Gribory

At the Moulin Gribory, private individuals can have oil made from their walnut or hazelnut kernels by appointment. You can watch the process and take the finished oil home. The appointment is part of the offering: arrange it in advance if you would like to see your own kernels being processed. The Moulin Gribory is therefore a practical addition to the hikes and historical visits, but with a different focus: food processing takes center stage here.

The Moulin Gribory also produces flour from organic grain, using both roller milling and stone mills. In addition to processing nuts, the mill also grinds grain. The two methods mentioned give a straightforward idea of the different ways flour is produced there; they are distinct from the oil-making service available by appointment.
