Marcillat-en-Combraille combines gently rolling bocage countryside with cultural and historical attractions: the Maison de la Combraille, the Église Notre-Dame and the Circuit L’Économique along a former railway line used for transporting goods. These experiences are complemented by a 52-kilometre cycling loop and a family hike. This way, you can discover different aspects of the Combraille, each with its own cultural and landscape highlights.
Culture at the Maison de la Combraille and the Église Notre-Dame
The Maison de la Combraille is dedicated not to a single building, but to the natural, landscape and historical heritage of the Combraille. These topics are presented in five exhibition rooms; the Maison also raises awareness of biodiversity. Its focus is therefore clearly distinct from that of the Église Notre-Dame: one explores regional themes, while the other focuses on specific architectural features and their history. This distinction can help you choose what to see, depending on whether you want to explore the Combraille through its themes or focus on the architectural history of a church.
At the Église Notre-Dame, it is possible to distinguish between the building’s history and its protection status. The choir and apses date from the 12th century; the bell tower, apse and choir are protected under the ISMH designation. The dates place the architectural elements in time, while the protection status identifies their special conservation status. The church can be visited independently using an information sheet. Check visiting arrangements in advance, as access rules may change. The choir is the liturgical area by the altar; apses usually form a rounded end to the church interior.
Bocage, former railway line and routes
The gently rolling bocage countryside shapes the area. The Circuit L’Économique provides a tangible link between landscape and land use: it follows a former railway line used for transporting goods, passing through meadows and cattle farms with Charolais and Limousin cattle. The combination of the former railway line, meadows and livestock farming gives the Circuit its own distinctive landscape character. It complements the cultural themes of the Maison and the church with a view of the rural character of the Combraille.
Two different routes are available, depending on your preferred activity. Les routes vallonnées de la Combraille is a 52-kilometre cycling loop for cycle tourism, starting in Marcillat-en-Combraille. Its circular format, starting point and length give the ride a clearly defined form. Les Tartasses Bis is a family hike in the heart of the Combraille, between streams and paths lined with low stone walls. The cycling route is defined by its loop format and stated distance; the hike is characterised by the landscape features described along the way. This gives you a choice between a cycling loop of a specified length and a hike with distinctive features along the route.
