Guided château tours, a historical walk and the story of the former N7 give Lapalisse several ways to explore. When planning your trip, timing matters too: tours at Château de La Palice are seasonal, the Grand Embouteillage has its own event programme, and the N7 route is located in the Pays de Lapalisse.

Château de La Palice and its history

Château de La Palice offers guided tours every day from 1 April to 1 November, except Tuesdays. The park can be visited independently; check seasonal opening times before your trip. Inside the château, you’ll see a furnished feudal residence dating from the 12th to the 16th century, with coffered ceilings. It was the residence of French Marshal Jacques II de Chabannes La Palice and has been inhabited by the same family since 1430.

The visit also includes a unique collection of flags representing the nations of the world. It represents peoples from all continents and religions and is visited as part of the château tour. The visit therefore combines architectural and family history with another collection, rather than focusing solely on the rooms of the residence.

Historic streets and walking route

The historical walk passes through Lapalisse’s old streets and by several landmarks. These include an old half-timbered house on the corner of Rue du Commerce and Rue Notre-Dame, as well as the former Hostellerie du Puits de l'Image and its landscaped square. The route also passes the former hospital, the Salle de la Grenette and Place du Champ de Foire. Esplanade Maréchal de La Palice is on the site of the former mill.

For a historical exploration, there is also the audio-guided walk “Laissez-vous conter Lapalisse”. It offers another way to get to know the town with a focus on its history. Check that the experience is available before your trip.

Parc floral, Besbre and activities

The three-hectare Parc floral includes a French garden and an English garden. More than 95 plant species, a peony collection and a discovery trail featuring remarkable trees give the park a variety of botanical highlights. You can walk and relax by the Besbre, which runs through the town centre. Fishing is also possible there; fishing in ponds and rivers is also available in Lapalisse.

Other leisure options include signposted walking routes and horse-drawn carriage rides. These offer different experiences: Parc floral showcases plants and remarkable trees, while walking routes and carriage rides offer other ways to spend your leisure time. At L'Échoppe des saveurs, visitors can discover oils from Huilerie de Lapalisse, including delicate, virgin, organic and speciality oils, as well as walnut, hazelnut, pistachio and sesame oils. Check what the shop has to offer before your trip.

Grand Embouteillage and Route Nationale 7

The Grand Embouteillage de Lapalisse recreates the historic traffic jam associated with holiday departures in the 1950s and 1960s. Participants and visitors are expected to wear period clothing and bring luggage and holiday accessories. The event features historical scenes, a swing and rock ’n’ roll atmosphere, and a vintage market. The programme may vary from one edition to another, so check the dates and programme for the specific event.

The former N7 is also part of the region’s heritage. In the Pays de Lapalisse, it has been signposted as “Nationale 7 Historique” since 2011. The 30-kilometre historic Route Royale-Impériale-RN7 section runs there. You can follow it by bicycle or in a vintage car and discover 30 historic and tourist attractions along the way. This route covers the Pays de Lapalisse, not just the town itself.
