A longer hike with clearly stated details, a body of water for walking and fishing, and traces of craftsmanship and architectural history give Lalizolle a variety of highlights. To choose the focus of your getaway, you can first decide whether hiking, a break at the Étang de Duème or local history should shape your stay.
Hiking toward the Sioule
The “De la Sioule aux bois de Veauce” trail is 17.3 kilometres long, with 510 metres of elevation gain and a moderate difficulty rating. The distance, elevation gain and rating give you concrete points of reference for planning your day; match the route to what you have in mind. As trail conditions can change, check the current state of the route before setting out.
From the village of Lalizolle, the trail descends toward the Gorges de la Sioule, with panoramic views of the Chaîne des Puys and the Sancy Massif. The route also leads to the Chouvigny viewpoint, which overlooks the gorges, the Sioule and a medieval fortress. The panoramas offer different views: expansive mountain ranges on the descent, and views of the river and gorge from the viewpoint.
Take a break or fish at the Étang de Duème
The Étang de Duème offers another way to spend time outdoors: walkers can enjoy a picnic or take a break there, and fishing is permitted. Fish found there include roach, gudgeon, perch, carp and tench. If you plan to fish, check the local rules in advance, as they may change. While the trail’s distance, elevation gain and difficulty shape how you plan, the Étang is all about walking, taking a break and fishing. You can choose where to focus based on the kind of stay you’re looking for.
Craftsmanship, architecture and local history
La Verrerie in Lalizolle was a site where master glassmakers worked in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Château de Chalouze is a 19th-century replica of a feudal castle. Its façade incorporates a central square tower, along with two slender, elongated corner turrets. The historical references span different periods: La Verrerie represents a site of glassmaking, while the château is a later castle replica.
Historically, the church of Sancta Maria de Ecclesiola was under the authority of the Abbey of Ebreuil and the Diocese of Clermont. Craftsmanship, architectural history and ecclesiastical affiliation offer different ways to explore Lalizolle’s past, rather than focusing on just one theme.
