The Église Saint-Maurice, material traces of earlier boating activity and the cult of Saint Vincent shape the cultural character of Château-sur-Allier. A cycling tour reflects the town’s historic connection with the Allier, while a circular trail focuses on the area’s fauna and flora.
Church and Boating Heritage
The Église Saint-Maurice is a simple Romanesque building dating from the 12th century. It houses three large stone statues, two of which are protected as historic monuments. The cult of Saint Vincent is also still evidenced and alive in the church. Its architecture, sculptures and religious tradition offer visitors a variety of cultural points of interest.
You can visit the church independently; keys are available on request from the town hall. This allows you to arrange access in advance. Material traces of earlier boating activity have also been preserved in Château-sur-Allier. The “Marin d'eau douce” route conveys the town’s historic connection with the Allier. The Allier is Europe’s last major free-flowing river.
Cycling and Walking Routes with Different Themes
“Marin d'eau douce” is a 10.2-kilometre cycling tour. It is recommended for children aged ten and over, occasional cyclists and cycling enthusiasts. Route conditions and recommendations may change; check the latest information before setting out.
On the PR 6 “Les rues creuses” circular trail, you can discover the local fauna and flora along the paths in Château-sur-Allier, particularly by the Allier. The two routes have different themes: “Marin d'eau douce” focuses on the historic connection with the Allier, while the circular trail focuses on nature. If you are choosing between cycling and walking, this difference can help you decide what best suits your interests.
The Via-Allier V70 route starts in Château-sur-Allier and follows a shared road to Moulins. Take this road section into account when planning your trip, and check route conditions and any possible closures before setting out.
Visit the Château and Enjoy the Cultural Programme
The Château de Saint-Augustin is a château dating from the Régence period, built from multicoloured bricks between the 15th and 18th centuries. Guided tours of the interior and exterior are available, depending on the current visitor schedule. During your visit, you can also see the stables, tack room and chapel.
The visits require different preparations: keys for an independent visit to the Église Saint-Maurice are available on request from the town hall, while a visit to the Château de Saint-Augustin should be planned around the current guided tour schedule.
