Treban combines historic buildings with themes that can shape a stay in different ways. At its heart is the Romanesque Église Saint-Pierre; on the D33, the Château de Boucherolles comes into view as you leave Treban in the direction of Châtel. There is also evidence of a Roman road found within the commune, pond fishing at the Étang du Chapitre, and the milling trade in the Allier. The range thus extends from architectural and regional history to a specific leisure activity.

Église Saint-Pierre: Romanesque Architecture and Building History

The Église Saint-Pierre in the centre of Treban dates from the Romanesque period. A papal bull issued by Eugene III mentions the church on 20 February 1152 in a list of the holdings of the Priory of Souvigny, which depended on Cluny Abbey. The building also features a clearly dated later alteration: the bell tower was rebuilt on the southeastern chapel in 1835. This makes it possible to distinguish the building’s Romanesque origins, its documentary mention in the Middle Ages, and a change made in the 19th century. Those interested in architecture will find both an early historical context and a specific detail about the building’s later history.

Château de Boucherolles and Its Garden

The Château de Boucherolles is a fortified château dating from the 15th century. Its water-filled moats remained until the 18th century, and the main building has two round towers. The estate comes into view from the D33 in the direction of Châtel as you leave Treban. The flower beds add a seasonal touch: azaleas and rhododendrons line the outbuildings and are particularly worth seeing in May. The site thus brings together the history of fortification and a garden specifically associated with spring.

Evidence of a Roman Road

Evidence of a Roman road has also been found within the commune of Treban. Its route led from Tronget in the direction of Port de la Chaise on the Sioule. The two place names give a specific direction for this historical connection: from Tronget to a destination on the Sioule. The evidence of the Roman road thus adds another historical layer to the architectural history of the church and château.

Pond Fishing at the Étang du Chapitre

Day permits are available for pond fishing at the Étang du Chapitre; anglers may use a maximum of three rods each. Trout fishing days are also held there. Day permits and organised trout fishing days offer different ways to plan a fishing trip. As fishing regulations can change, check the rules currently in force in advance. If you plan to attend one of the trout fishing days, you should also confirm the event dates.

Milling and the Origin of the Wheat

Minoterie Roche represents a milling tradition in the Allier that dates back to 1830. At its Le Moulin de Joncs site, the company selects exclusively French wheat; most of it comes from Val d’Allier and Limagne. Its products include La 1830 « Tradition Française » flour, which carries the Label Rouge. Alongside the long milling tradition, the focus is also on the choice of raw ingredient and where it comes from: the wheat is French, and two subregions are named as the source of the largest share. Visitors to Treban with an interest in architectural history can thus also explore a connection to food production in the Allier.
