The Plan d’eau de Vieure covers 65 hectares, of which 33 hectares are taken up by the pond. The relationship between the total area and the water surface gives the site a clear focus on the water. Canoes, pedal boats and stand-up paddleboards are available to rent around the Plan d’eau. These services may be seasonal; check whether they are available when you visit. Vieure’s other attractions include marked hiking trails and historic architecture, giving you different themes to consider for your stay.

Water activities and trails around Vieure

Marked hiking trails can be found around the Plan d’eau and in the Bocage Bourbonnais. For an outing with specific details, the Circuit des vénérables – PR 22 is a useful guide: the route is 11 kilometres long, rated very easy, and listed as taking 2 hours and 15 minutes. It starts at 18 Place de l’église in Vieure. Check current trail conditions and access before setting out, as both may vary.

The circular route includes several different discoveries. There are wooden sculptures in the hamlet of Les Muriats, and the Circuit also passes the Forêt domaniale de Dreuille. The forest is characterised by majestic oaks, old beeches and mature hornbeams. This route therefore combines a hike with a clearly specified distance with sculptures and a forest shaped by a variety of tree species. The marked trails around the pond and in the Bocage also point to a wider area for hiking, though the same route details are not available for these trails.

At the Plan d’eau, the outdoor escape game “L’Autre Monde” is also designed as a cooperative treasure hunt. The game includes a backpack, a travel diary and various interactive props. Its shared puzzle-solving and search format sets it apart from the hike, where the route itself and its stops take centre stage. Together, the two activities offer different ways to shape your stay around a theme, without requiring you to combine them into a fixed itinerary.

Châteaux, from architectural history to parkland

The Château de la Salle combines medieval fabric dating from the 14th century with a later extension dating to around 1875. This included, among other things, a square tower in the Neo-Gothic and Neo-Louis XIII styles. The building therefore reflects distinct historical and architectural layers. The château as a whole is protected as a Monument historique; the protection also covers the park, outbuildings and furnished interiors. It was listed by decree on 18 November 2002.

The park of the Château de La Chaussière offers a different landscape perspective. Designed as an English landscape park, it features century-old trees and offers a beautiful view. Unlike the architectural history of the Château de la Salle, the focus here is on the landscaped grounds and their mature trees. The two châteaux thus offer contrasting highlights: historic fabric and the scope of its protection on the one hand, and garden character, trees and views on the other.

An announced festival at the Plan d’eau

The Hadra Trance Festival is announced as an annual event at the Plan d’eau. The festival is advertised as welcoming 10,000 guests, with four days of uninterrupted music and celebrations, three stages and more than 150 artists. These figures describe the event’s announced scale; specific dates and arrangements are seasonal. If the festival is relevant to your trip, check the announced dates before planning your stay.

Vieure offers several clearly distinct themes to help you decide on your trip: the pond and the water activities available there, an easy hike with named stops, two châteaux with different highlights, and an announced festival. Choose the focus that suits your visit, and take the dates into account for seasonal activities or events.
