In Chantelle, you can discover its landscapes and culture in different ways: in the Gorges de la Bouble, at the Romanesque Abbaye Saint-Vincent, and on self-guided tours of the town. For planning your day, details of the routes and the abbey’s visiting conditions are both helpful.
Gorges de la Bouble and walking trails
The Gorges de la Bouble extend across Chantelle and Deneuille-les-Chantelle. They stretch for more than four kilometres before giving way to the alluvial plain of the Sioule. The natural area includes flowing water, damp seepage zones, riverside woodland, hillside forests, scree slopes and scrub. Water, different types of woodland and rocky slopes thus shape the description of the gorges.
The Promenade Anne de Beaujeu is a 4 km walking trail marked in yellow, with a stated duration of 90 minutes. It starts at the car park in front of the Abbaye de Chantelle; another starting point is Deneuille-les-Chantelle town hall. Check trail and parking conditions before setting out.
The “Les passerelles” trail is also in the Gorges de la Bouble area: it is 5.5 km long and has an elevation gain of 160 metres. The two trails can be compared by their stated lengths. For the Promenade, the markings and duration are also provided; for “Les passerelles,” the elevation gain is given. This gives you different planning details to help choose a route.
Abbey and self-guided visits
The Abbaye Saint-Vincent cannot be visited in its entirety. During opening hours, only the courtyard, the church and the sisters’ shop are accessible. Guided tours showcase the church’s Romanesque architecture and its apse. Check opening hours before travelling if you are planning a visit.
Self-guided visits in Chantelle are available year-round with a tourist map or through the Wivisite app. The “Pépit de Chantelle” treasure hunt also takes you through the Gorges de la Bouble. The app-based activity revolves around Bianca’s riddles, which participants solve to win the treasure. Check that the app is available on your device beforehand.
History, shops and visits around town
During a walk through the Gorges de la Bouble, you can visit the restored Moulin des Pierres. If the mill itself is the reason for your visit, check its restoration status beforehand. Another highlight is the historic Cul de Sac quarter, where craftspeople, second-hand dealers, antique dealers, shopkeepers and gallery owners welcome visitors to their shops.
At the Maison du Tourisme, you can see a large model of the 15th-century Château de Chantelle. It adds a specific historical feature to the town’s visitor attractions. The different themes thus range from the natural landscape of the gorges and Romanesque architecture to local shops and the town’s history.
