La Chabanne lies in the Besbre Valley, whose river is known for the quality of its water. The river runs through the village; the Sapey is a tributary of the Besbre. Beech trees and granite shape the landscape. Here, a river landscape, hiking trails, and visible traces of local history come together.

Besbre Valley and Hiking Routes

The Les Grands Bois and La Grande Serve circular trails are each 9 km long. Les Grands Bois is listed as taking about 2 hours and 30 minutes, and La Grande Serve about 2 hours and 15 minutes. For the same distance, the approximate times differ by around 15 minutes. This offers a practical comparison for planning, without distinguishing between the routes by length. If the signage or route changes, check the route details again.

The educational trail along the Le Sapey stream follows the water through deciduous and coniferous woodland and offers panoramic views over the Besbre Valley. Conditions may vary seasonally, so take this into account when planning. The GR3 long-distance hiking trail also passes through La Chabanne; its route should be checked again before publication. The two circular trails, the educational trail, and the long-distance trail are separate ways to experience the landscape.

Sainte-Marie Church and Local Heritage

Construction of Sainte-Marie Church began in 1836. It was extended between 1852 and 1858. During a restoration from 1933 to 1935, the painter Despalles from Cusset was commissioned to create devotional images. The church is also known for its Art Deco interior. These milestones give local history a clear timeline: from the start of construction, through the extension, to the work carried out in the 20th century.

At La Presle, pits once used to soak animal hides for tanning are among the visible remains. The water of the stream at La Presle made it possible to establish a very active knitting mill. La Chabanne’s unusual heritage also includes mills and a former lead and silver mine. Local heritage therefore encompasses not only the church, but also traces of crafts and past economic activity.
