In the centre of Meaulne, the Aumance and Cher rivers meet. Their confluence gives the village a clear geographical identity; other highlights include the Church of Saint-Symphorien with its frescoes, a bridge with pink granite arches, and trails with specific destinations. Visitors choosing a destination for its culture, scenery or outdoor activities will find a range of options here—from wall paintings to a loop trail of about 15 km.

Church and bridge by the river

The Church of Saint-Symphorien, including its wall paintings, has been listed as a historic monument by decree dated 30 September 1991. Its frescoes show Italianate influences and date from the first half of the 18th century. Both its place in art history and its painted decoration are among Meaulne’s defining cultural features.

The bridge over the Aumance has pink granite arches. The material offers a different point of interest from the frescoes: here, the focus is on the design of a structure in relation to the river. Together, the church and bridge offer different reasons to appreciate Meaulne beyond its position at the confluence—through its paintings in one case and its visible building material in the other.

Trails with different focuses

A loop trail passes seven washhouses and is about 15 km long. Its approximate length helps you plan it as a separate activity, while the washhouses give it a clear theme. In Meaulne-Vitray, the Canal de Berry offers opportunities to get around on foot, on horseback and by bicycle. Alongside a themed loop trail, you can choose from several ways to explore the canal.

For anglers, the Esox Meaulnois association manages 5 km of fishing waters along the Aumance, from the Passerelle des Seignes to its confluence with the Cher. Along the Canal de Berry, the association manages a further 5 km, from La Queugne lock upstream to the municipal boundary downstream. Fishing regulations and access conditions may change; check them before planning your trip.

Fishing, events and discoveries

The FĂŞte de la pĂŞche, organised by the ESOX association, usually takes place on the first Sunday in June. It is preceded by a trout stocking, followed by a country-style meal at the Meaulne campsite. As dates and arrangements may vary, check the details in advance if you would like to plan your stay around the event.

“PÉPIT: Rouir et découvrir” is an outdoor geocaching treasure hunt. Meaulne’s water-related heritage provides the clues. Once you find the treasure, you can collect rewards. There are also quiet spots under the trees along the Aumance. The options therefore include both a playful way to explore the local water heritage and a place to relax by the river.

The Jardin de la Cure was designed as a shared green space with medicinal and aromatic plants and was intended to be open to everyone. A small educational garden for schoolchildren was also planned. If the garden is important to your plans, check in advance whether a visit is possible. This site complements the cultural and water-related attractions with a community-focused garden project.
