A narrow rocky ridge at the confluence of the Cher and the Ours stream gives Sainte-Thérence a striking landmark: this is where the Château de l'Ours stands, on the boundary between Sainte-Thérence and Saint-Genest. Two waterways, rocky ground and a municipal boundary converge here. The town offers a range of options for planning your trip: medieval military architecture, a Romanesque church, a more challenging hike and a reservoir where public fishing is permitted.

The Château de l'Ours at the confluence

The Château de l'Ours is a medieval military architectural complex; its history includes ruins dating from the 12th century. The site has been listed as a “Monument historique” since 1995. This makes medieval defensive architecture and its historical heritage the main focus. Its position on a narrow rocky ridge at the confluence also highlights the special relationship between the structure and the river landscape: the Cher and the Ours stream meet here. The château also stands on the boundary between the municipalities of Sainte-Thérence and Saint-Genest.

There is free parking at the Château de l'Ours, followed by a short path to reach it on foot. Access is subject to local conditions. Take the footpath into account when planning your visit, and check the situation on site.

The church and the tomb

The Church of Sainte-Thérence dates from the late 12th century and is built in the Auvergnat Romanesque style. It offers a different perspective on the town’s architectural history from the medieval military complex. The tomb of Sainte Therence is located outside the church, at the head of the choir. The head of the choir is the end of the chancel; this detail places the tomb on the exterior of the church building. A cultural and historical exploration therefore involves keeping two specific features distinct: the Romanesque church and the tomb located there.

Hiking and the reservoir

A more challenging hike from Sainte-Thérence leads to the Château de l'Ours and to a viewpoint overlooking the Cher gorges. If you would like to combine a visit to the château with some exercise, you can make this hike a separate focus of your trip planning. Its more challenging rating makes it a useful alternative to a visit focused solely on cultural heritage.

Another point of interest on the Cher is the Prat Dam. Built in 1970, it is a buttress dam and is used mainly for hydroelectric power generation. The reservoir covers 27 hectares. Public fishing is permitted there with a valid departmental fishing licence. If you want to fish, check the current regulations in advance. This distinguishes the hike to the viewpoint from a visit to the reservoir: one focuses on a more challenging walk, while the other offers fishing subject to the applicable requirements.

Vegetation, landscape and events

The Château de l'Ours grounds were designated a protected area in 1941 because of their distinctive vegetation. This includes boxwood growing on granite soil. This botanical feature adds another point of interest to the site’s medieval architectural history. In the Combraille Bourbonnaise, the landscape is crossed by the Cher gorges and its tributaries; the Church of Sainte-Thérence is also among the region’s Romanesque churches. This makes it possible to consider the local church within the wider context of regional Romanesque architecture, while the château retains its own distinct setting at the confluence.

The Nuits de la Chouette (Owl Nights) also connects the town with nature. The event is held in Sainte-Thérence every two years. The edition on March 8, 2025, included a public presentation about owls and a night walk to listen to owl calls. If you would like to include this event in your trip plans, check the dates before travelling.
