Saint-Gérand-Le-Puy combines the history of James Joyce with architecture and a hilly landscape. Local highlights include a museum with literary offerings, the Église Saint-Julien and a described walking route.
James Joyce in the Village
The Musée James Joyce features temporary exhibitions and artworks connected with James Joyce and his work. The literary library Anna Livia Plurabelle includes books that can be consulted on site. The museum offers a fun guided tour for children and a playful “Odyssey” for teenagers and adults, following in Joyce’s footsteps through the village.
The open-air exhibition “Following Ulysses” is on permanent display in Saint-Gérand-Le-Puy. It was donated to the Association James Joyce by the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris. Check the exhibition status before your trip.
In the James Joyce Park next to the town hall, a bronze sculpture depicts the seated writer on a stone bench. The statue commemorates his stay in Saint-Gérand-Le-Puy between Christmas 1939 and December 13, 1940.
Church Architecture and Local History
The Église Saint-Julien dates from the 11th century and was formerly the castle chapel. Its nave has a barrel vault; the side aisles are supported by quarter-circle vaults. This architectural style is characteristic of Auvergne. Painted decorations are layered over one another and date from the Middle Ages through the 19th century.
The Château de Saint-Gérand-Le-Puy is dated to the 16th to 18th centuries. The present manor house was rebuilt by the Urfé family on the site of the ruins of the former fortress. The Monument aux Morts is also part of the village’s history; it was created by sculptor Jean Magrou.
Summer Cultural Events
The “Jour d’Ulysse” takes place every year in June, with various events and exhibitions about James Joyce. Every Friday in July and August, at around 9:15 p.m., the Théâtre de Verdure hosts conferences, singing performances and theatrical productions. The two time periods are distinct: the Jour d’Ulysse is on the calendar in June, followed later in the summer by the program at the Théâtre de Verdure. Check the specific dates before your trip; individual programs may change.
Rolling Hills and Walking Route
Saint-Gérand-Le-Puy is characterized by hilly landscapes and has fossil-rich sites. The “Randonnée à Saint Gérand le Puy” walking route follows a stony path downhill to the “Puy Rambeau.” The Puy Digon can be seen on the right; the route offers views of the surrounding area and the Puy de Dôme, while a quarry lies to the left.
This makes the walk a different kind of experience from the museum and buildings: the focus here is on the route and landscape. Check the trail conditions before setting out.
