The Canal latéral à la Loire shapes Gannay-sur-Loire’s connection to the water. It stretches for 196 kilometres between Digoin in the département of Saône-et-Loire and Briare in the département of Loiret. These endpoints mark an extensive route; locally, a route leads to the Port des Vanneaux, and a cycling route goes as far as Gannay. Together with its heritage and natural areas, the town offers different starting points for planning your outings.
By the canal: harbour route and cycling route
The Balade des bateliers crosses a stone-and-steel bridge, from which you can see the Canal latéral à la Loire, and continues to the Port des Vanneaux. There, the former barges used by inland waterway boatmen have made way for sports and leisure boats. Numerous picnic tables line the harbour. The route thus combines views of the canal with a waterside destination and today’s boating activity in the port.
The Petit tour en Bourbonnais cycling route takes a different approach: it goes as far as Gannay-sur-Loire. This lets you distinguish a cycling route to the town from the Balade des bateliers, which follows the canal to the harbour. Check the route details before setting out.
Nature in a wider context
The Type 1 ZNIEFF area “LA LOIRE DE LESME A SAINT-HILAIRE-FONTAINE” also includes Gannay-sur-Loire. The “Sologne bourbonnaise” Natura 2000 Special Protection Area for Birds also includes the municipality. Both areas place Gannay within a broader natural setting and add a landscape perspective to the specific routes connecting the canal and harbour. When planning, it is useful to distinguish this wider geographical context from routes with named destinations.
Architecture and monument history
The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste consists of a bay that supports the bell tower, a rectangular nave and a narrower choir with a flat end. A bay is a structural section; here, it supports the tower. The nave and choir differ in shape and width. Their layout can therefore be understood in terms of both structural function and architectural forms.
The Maison des Bardets is partly listed as a historic monument. The protected features are the façades and roofs, including those of the outbuildings; the listing dates from 21 March 1983. The Motte castrale des Maîtres-Jean was fully listed on 5 May 1995. The scope distinguishes the two listings: specific structural elements are named for the Maison, while the Motte is listed in its entirety.
The Arbre de Sully adds a historical tradition to the buildings: it is the remnant of a tree that, according to tradition, is said to have been planted under King Henry IV as a marker of the distance between Limoges and Autun.
