Ébreuil lies at the entrance to the Gorges de la Sioule. In the historic centre, abbey history and old buildings offer cultural discoveries, while routes to the heights and riverside activities provide other points of interest. You can shape your stay around local history, walks and activities on the Sioule.

Abbey Church and Architectural History

The Abbatiale Saint-Léger has been an abbey church since the 10th century and was elevated to a Benedictine abbey in 1080. Its architectural features include a five-bay nave dating from the early 11th century and an Auvergnat-style narthex. An ambulatory and radiating chapels date from the late 12th century. The interior contains murals from the second half of the 11th century, as well as ex-votos from the 16th and 17th centuries.

As a listed historic site, the abbey church is part of the Route des Églises Peintes du Bourbonnais. If you would like to visit the church, check the opening arrangements in advance. Other historic buildings include the Halle aux Marchands, built in the 18th century and classified as a historic monument, and the Maison de la Gabelle, dating from 1670. The salt tax was paid at the Maison, but salt was not stored there. After the gabelle was abolished following the French Revolution, the building was converted into a garrison.

Since the hospital closed in 2009 and ceased to serve as a hospital, the galleries in the Hôpital des Charitains have been used for exhibitions and cultural events. The programme may vary. For a different perspective on local history, a signposted visitor route runs on foot through the historic centre. A free guided tour of Ébreuil is available via the Wivisites app; check that the app is available before your visit.

Walking Between the Centre and the Heights

Ébreuil is also one of the Pépit play areas. This free, interactive app combines treasure hunts, heritage, walks and geocaching. It offers a more playful way to explore the town alongside the guided tour. The availability of digital services may change.

The Sainte-Foy La Chapelle route is 6 km long. A 600 m out-and-back path leads to the Chapelle Saint-Michel; the Chapelle Sainte-Foy offers panoramic views over the Sioule valley from the heights of Ébreuil. The route passes through an Espace Naturel Sensible, where orchids grow. Around twenty protected orchid species, including the military orchid, thrive on the dry, chalky grasslands of the Ébreuil hills. The chalk slopes are designated “Espaces Naturels Sensibles” by the Allier Department.

A longer walk is the GR-300 section from Ébreuil to Saint-Hilaire-la-Croix: it is 10.75 km long and takes an estimated 2 hours 45 minutes. The Sainte-Foy La Chapelle route is shorter; trail conditions can change and should be taken into account when planning. The Spot Trail d'Ebreuil crosses the Sioule via the Pont d’Ébreuil and passes beneath the Viaduc Eiffel. Upstream of the Pont d’Ébreuil, a footbridge provides a safe crossing. La Levée has long been a popular place for walks.

The Sioule and Water Activities

The Parcours Plan d’eau d’Ebreuil covers about one kilometre of the Sioule within the town centre. This fishing stretch is suitable for families and occasional anglers. Check the fishing regulations and any required permits in advance. The riverbank area also has a nautical centre for canoeing, sailing and yachting; specific providers and activity availability may vary.

For trips through the Gorges de la Sioule, Aqua Canoë rents single and double kayaks, as well as single and double canoes. The provider also organises shuttle transport to the launch points. The service is seasonal; confirm the shuttle arrangements when booking. Hippos offers riding lessons in the heart of the Gorges de la Sioule. Check current availability in advance.
