Saint-Rémy-en-Rollat combines a distinctive natural environment along the Allier with cultural and historical themes. The Espace Naturel Sensible (ENS) de la boire des Carrés is located along the river within the municipality. The Boire des Carrés covers 200 hectares and features a species-rich mosaic of river habitats. Named nature trails, a mineralogical exhibition and traces of local history offer different focal points for a stay.
Natural Environment and Trails
The Boire des Carrés is accessible to people with reduced mobility and offers adapted visitor information. Specific arrangements may change; if you need particular assistance or conditions, check in advance. This will help you plan your visit according to your needs.
Two nature trails offer a direct comparison by distance: the Tour de la boire is 1.6 kilometres long, and the Circuit de la Héronnière is 2.4 kilometres long. The second trail is therefore 800 metres longer. These figures help you compare the length of the two trails. Local conditions may affect access, so check trail conditions before your visit.
The Boucle Nature has its own restrictions. It is in a flood zone and cannot be walked during high water. It is also closed every year in April, May and June because of the sensitive nesting season. Take this closure period into account when choosing your travel dates, and check local conditions before planning to walk the route.
Exhibition, Craftsmanship and Local History
La Cristallière offers a 300-square-metre exhibition space. Since 1969, visits have been free and self-guided. On display are minerals, fossils and objects made of natural stone, as well as silver jewellery and fashion jewellery adorned with gemstones. The exhibition is housed in buildings with typical Bourbonnais architecture. It is advisable to check the latest visiting conditions before your visit.
La Cristallière also includes a lapidary workshop. Jewellery is made to order there, and stones and crystals are cut or polished. As well as the minerals and jewellery on display, local offerings therefore include the working of stone and crystal.
Another historic structure is the Tour de Rollat: the brick-built tower is the only surviving remnant of the castle of the lords of Rollat. The area’s history reaches back further still. Between 1892 and 1895, ceramic fragments were found in fields in Saint-Rémy-en-Rollat, in pits that were probably used as rubbish pits by a Gallo-Roman pottery workshop. The interpretation of the pits remains probable, not certain.
Planning Your Stay and Hotel Choice
If you are looking for a hotel in Saint-Rémy-en-Rollat, it is best to first decide which themes you would like to shape your days. For a nature-focused stay, the lengths of the two nature trails offer a concrete comparison; the Boucle Nature is also subject to an annual closure period and possible flooding. If you are particularly interested in minerals, jewellery or architecture, you can plan La Cristallière as a separate activity and add the Tour de Rollat as a historical point of interest. If accessibility-related facilities are important to your plans, check the specific arrangements in advance. This will help you tailor your stay to your interests and the conditions for visiting each site.
