Discover Vichy through its spa town history, distinctive architecture and waterside routes. The range of attractions extends from a protected cultural site in the city centre to parks and routes around Lac d’Allier. When planning your stay, start with a simple question: would you like to focus on thermal history and architecture, or also make time for parks and outdoor activities?

Spa town history and architecture

As a French spa town, Vichy is part of the serial UNESCO World Heritage Site The Great Spa Towns of Europe. One specific cultural heritage site is the six-hectare Parc des Sources in the city centre. It has been classified as a Monument historique since 1994.

The Hall des Sources brings the town’s thermal history to life in a particular building: it was built in 1903 at the outlets of the Chomel and Grande Grille springs. The Hall des Sources is open to the public free of charge and offers a free tasting of water from the Célestins spring. Check access details before your visit.

The Grand établissement thermal was also inaugurated in 1903. The Vichy Opera House offers a different architectural highlight: it has a column-free metal structure and Art Nouveau decoration. Performances take place there throughout the year. If you would like to attend one, check the dates for your travel period, as the current programme may change.

Religious architecture is another point of interest. The Saint-Blaise–Notre-Dame-des-Malades complex brings together the older Saint-Blaise church, built in 1714, and the new Notre-Dame-des-Malades church, built in 1931. As a complex, it is one of the notable examples of religious Art Deco architecture. The two dates show the time gap between the churches; the architectural classification applies to the complex.

Parks and seasonal events

In Parc Napoléon III, winding paths circle broad lawns. Today, the park has just over 800 trees and a collection of tree species from every continent. Here, the focus is on specific landscape features, while Parc des Sources is classified as a cultural heritage site in the city centre.

During the warmer months, the Kiosque à musique de la source de l’Hôpital hosts numerous events during the day and in the evening. If you would like to include one in your trip, check the dates for your preferred period: the programme is seasonal and may change.

On foot and along routes by Lac d’Allier

For outdoor activities, the Via Allier offers a clear measure: around Vichy, it provides 27 kilometres of routes between Billy and Saint-Yorre, reserved exclusively for pedestrians and cyclists. The route reaches Vichy from the north and continues along the developed promenade beside Lac d’Allier. As route conditions may change, it is a good idea to check local conditions before your visit.

The Circuit Autour du Lac can be enjoyed on foot, while jogging, on inline skates, by bicycle or in a Rosalie. These ways of getting around differ from the Via Allier, whose reserved routes are exclusively for pedestrians and cyclists. When planning, you can therefore consider not only the route but also the mode of transport that suits you.

This is a practical starting point for making your own choices, without assuming a fixed daily itinerary. For events, check the specific dates, and check local conditions before visiting a route.
