For Lavault-Sainte-Anne, you can plan your trip around two themes: heritage, with La Charité and the Église Sainte-Anne, and the Cher, with activities on the water. Another highlight is nature, with features such as the waterfall in the arboretum; in July, a jazz festival programme adds to the mix. The focus of your trip also determines whether to check visiting times, make a reservation, confirm seasonal operations or look up an event date first.
Heritage and visits
La Charité was recognised in 2004 as part of France’s “Patrimoine du XXe siècle” (20th-century heritage). This recognition date should be distinguished from the construction period of the Église Sainte-Anne: the church is Romanesque and dates from the 11th century. Its distinctive bell tower has four sides and is roofed with chestnut shingles. The church’s stone altar also dates from the 11th century and has ISMH protected status.
The Église Sainte-Anne can be visited independently or with a guide, by prior reservation. As reservation arrangements may change, check them before your visit. Visits to the entire architectural complex at La Charité are offered on the first Sunday of each month and last about two hours. Check the date before travelling if you would like to plan your visit around it.
The church is also the setting for an annual religious tradition: on 26 July, the statue of Saint Anne is carried beneath a canopy from the church to the cross near the mill. This fixed date differs from La Charité’s monthly visiting day, so it can serve as a separate point of reference when planning your trip.
The Cher, water and nature
The Cher runs alongside the town centre, where the canoe and kayak club is based. The Moulin de Chauvière whitewater centre offers canoeing, kayaking, rafting and hiking. A permanent slalom course lies directly below the centre. As seasonal operations may change, check what is available for your planned dates. The Cher is also popular with anglers.
Languistre is another named waterside spot: it covers 2.4 hectares, including 2 hectares of water. Languistre is leased to the local angling club.
The course of the Ruisseau des Serpents provides another nature highlight. The stream flows through the Bois de la Brosse and then feeds the waterfall in the Lavault-Sainte-Anne arboretum. This sequence of woodland, stream and waterfall offers a landscape focus distinct from the Cher and activities at the whitewater centre.
July dates and trip planning
Jazz au Fil du Cher takes place for a week each July across the Communauté d’Agglomération de Montluçon area. On Sunday, the festival programme includes a jazz walk at Pré de Chauvière in Lavault-Sainte-Anne. The festival therefore spans a wider area, while the walk takes place at a specifically named location in Lavault-Sainte-Anne.
When choosing your travel dates, compare the different schedules: visits to La Charité are offered on the first Sunday of the month, visiting the church requires a prior reservation, and Jazz au Fil du Cher takes place in July. Activities at the whitewater centre may vary by season. If you are looking for hotels in Lavault-Sainte-Anne, first decide which of these occasions will shape your stay, then check the relevant dates and reservation arrangements.
