For your trip planning, Autry-Issards offers a range of highlights: historic religious architecture and châteaux, as well as a marked walking trail and a pond. The buildings tell stories spanning several centuries; the trail’s length and stated duration give you a concrete basis for planning your time. Fishing and a designated picnic area are also among the main attractions by the water.
Church and Romanesque Architecture
The Église de la Sainte-Trinité is classified as a historic monument. Its lower nave sections date from the 11th century. Other features include Burgundian Romanesque elements, figurative capitals and an octagonal stone spire. The nave is the church’s elongated main space; its surviving lower sections provide a specific indication of the age of some of the building’s components. The capitals and spire add other architectural accents: here, you can look for sculpted architectural details, and there, for the shape of the stone roof finial. This makes it possible to understand the church not only through its dating, but also through several clearly identifiable design features.
Two Châteaux, Different Building Histories
The Château du Plessis was built in June 1497. The main construction phase of the Château d’Issards took place in the late 15th century, with another in the third quarter of the 19th century. Of the 15th-century building, only the residential tower and the adjoining ceremonial staircase survive. The accounts highlight different aspects: an exact construction date is given for the Château du Plessis, while the history of the Château d’Issards is divided into two major phases. The Château d’Issards was listed in part as a historic monument on December 26, 1968, and again on April 9, 2001.
Saint-Maurice: Priory and Protected Status
The former Saint-Maurice Priory can also be understood through its architectural components and history. The priory includes a transept, an apse and apsidioles; these parts were listed as a historic monument by decree on June 6, 1933. Around the year 1000, the church and outbuildings of Saint-Maurice became the property of the Cluniacs. This brings together an early history of ownership and a later, precisely dated protected status—two different points of reference in time for this site.
Walking Trail and Pond
The Circuit de La Rouche Coupée – PR 13 is a marked circular trail with yellow waymarkers. The route is 13 kilometres long, has 106 metres of elevation gain and a stated duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes. The distance and time estimate allow you to plan the walk as a dedicated block of time. These figures describe the route’s length, elevation gain and estimated duration, not an individual walking speed.
At the Étang - Autry-Issards, fishing is available with annual permits, as well as half-day, day and holiday permits. The Étang is designated as a second-category fishing site on a closed body of water. Since permit arrangements may change, check the available options before your fishing trip. A designated picnic area adds to the activities available by the water. You can combine your visit with a picnic, while the walking trail offers a separate option for a longer outing.
