Hop culture, castle architecture and traces of archaeological time offer different ways to explore Louny District. The UNESCO World Heritage Site “Žatec and the Landscape of Saaz Hops” includes rural hop fields and the villages of Stekník and Trnovany, as well as the historic centre of Žatec. This example brings to life the connection between cultural landscape and urban history: hops are encountered not only in the fields, but also in architectural history and visitor attractions.
Hop Landscape and Castle Architecture
Stekník Chateau is a striking landmark above historic hop fields that are still in use. This significant Rococo building has an Italian terraced garden; the visitor attractions also include a hop-related exhibition in the cellar. The chateau and garden offer different perspectives on architecture and landscape. The chateau offers four visitor tours, including one that ends at the Chapel of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary. As visitor offerings may change, check in advance which tours are available on your intended visit date.
The Chrám Chmele a Piva in Žatec also tells the story of the architectural side of hop production. The building is housed in a former hop warehouse and drying house, which served their original purpose for a hundred years from 1890 onwards. A guided tour takes you through a maze between bales of hops and into a sulphur chamber. Thus, the hop culture experience focuses not only on the fields, but also on historic buildings and their former use.
Castles and Archaeological Traces of Time
Nový Hrad was built between 1465 and 1474 above Jimlín and Zeměchy, on the route between Louny and Žatec. The castle is open to visitors and offers several tours. Its period of construction and location on the route between the two towns provide a different focus from the hop-related exhibitions and Rococo architecture. Those interested in architectural history will find a distinct way to explore the region’s historic traces here.
The Březno Archaeological Open-Air Museum is located at a significant archaeological site. Reconstructions bring to life the Neolithic, Iron Age, Migration Period and Early Slavic period. There are also archaeological experiments and prehistoric activities for visitors. Březno was almost continuously inhabited from 5000 BC to the 10th century AD. This long span of time helps visitors understand the reconstructions as an overview of several eras, rather than as a reconstruction of a single moment.
Landscape and Routes
Panenský Týnec lies in Džbán Nature Park. The landscape around the town features forests, steep slopes, ridges, rocks, streams, ponds, fields and hop gardens; the view extends to the Central Bohemian Uplands. Steppe areas can be found on Raná and on the slopes of nearby volcanic hills. One specific nature destination is the Úpatím Rané educational trail: it is two kilometres long, designed for walkers and rated easy. Exploring the landscape and following the educational trail offer different ways to experience nature.
The cycling routes are also clearly identified: Březno Archaeological Open-Air Museum lies on a yellow-marked hiking trail and Cycle Route 6. Stekník Chateau is also on Cycle Route 6, which runs from Žatec via Stekník towards Hradiště, Strkovice, Mradice, Skupice and Březno u Postoloprt. Check the current route before setting off.
Plan a Visit to Krásný Dvůr
Krásný Dvůr Chateau Park can be visited independently, without a guide, all year round. Advance reservations are required for guided tours of the interior. The park and courtyard are wheelchair accessible. This information applies to different parts of a visit to the chateau: the park is open year-round for unguided visits, while reservations are required for the interior.
Buses from Podbořany, Žatec and Chomutov stop at Krásný Dvůr; from there, it is about a 15-minute walk to the chateau. Seasonal Doupovské dráhy trains also reach Krásný Dvůr, with about a 20-minute walk from the station to the chateau. The approximate walk therefore varies depending on the stop. Check the timetables before travelling. The car park is about 30 metres from the chateau; also check current parking fees in advance.
