The unfinished Gothic church offers a distinctive insight into the history of Panenský Týnec: construction began in the Middle Ages but was never completed. Together with other churches and historic monuments, it shapes the cultural character of the town. The area is also connected to Džbán Nature Park. If you are weighing up cultural history and nature as different interests for your trip, you will find both here.
Monastery and Unfinished Church
The former Poor Clare monastery was founded by Habart ze Žirotína and built by 1280 as the third Franciscan monastery in Bohemia. Another important chapter in the area’s architectural history is the unfinished Gothic church, probably founded by Plichta ze Žirotína. Construction began around 1316; the church remained unfinished after the monastery fire of 1382.
The presbytery, the church’s chancel, has been preserved. It is 21 metres long, 9 metres wide and more than 20 metres high. These dimensions give a concrete impression of this part of the church. The monastery is protected as an immovable cultural monument and registered under number ÚSKP 43571/5-1295.
Further Historic Traces
St George’s Church also has several building phases: it retains an older church core, gained Baroque additions after 1722 and was remodelled further in 1904. Its history therefore differs markedly from that of the medieval monastery church. Another place to visit is the Chapel of St John of Nepomuk. It existed by 1740 at the latest and was renovated in 1998.
The local heritage also includes the tomb of Jan Tuscany. The Classicist-Empire-style tomb dates from 1800 and is crowned by a tall pyramid with a vase and sculptures. The monastery, churches, chapel and tomb offer several distinct points of interest for those interested in cultural history.
Džbán and Practical Information
The area of Panenský Týnec extends into Džbán Nature Park. The Džbán landscape includes flat woodlands, steep slopes, ridges and rocks above deep valleys, as well as views of the Bohemian Central Highlands. This natural setting complements the architectural history with a distinct nature theme, without requiring you to follow a set itinerary.
There is parking in front of the monastery grounds, and access is suitable for wheelchair users and pushchairs. Check the access conditions again before your arrival, as they may change. St George’s Church is not normally open to visitors. If you are planning to visit, ask locally about current access arrangements.
When looking for a holiday apartment in Panenský Týnec, these two themes can help you choose your destination: would you mainly like to explore the monastery’s history and the churches’ building phases, or would you also like to include the Džbán natural area? This lets you shape your stay around your interests without having to combine the individual sights into a fixed itinerary.
