Podbořany brings together architectural history, a museum and a landscape site of archaeological significance. The Muzeum Podbořany is housed in the former town hall at Dukelská 1; the building’s present-day Baroque appearance dates from 1751. At the museum, a former municipal function and a clearly dated architectural style thus come together.
Museum: Migration History and Geology
The exhibition “Hlasy Čechů z Volyně” at the Muzeum Podbořany tells the story of the Volhynian Czech community. Its thematic scope ranges from emigration from Austria-Hungary to the Russian Empire of the time, through the return to Czechoslovakia, to later developments. Accompanying texts, maps, numerous photographs and eyewitness memories present the subject from different perspectives: the maps provide orientation, while the photographs and memories add personal viewpoints.
“Geologie na Podbořansku” offers a different focus. The exhibition includes a fossilized horsetail tree trunk discovered in the Podbořansko region. This means that the same museum brings together a story of migration and community and a geological exhibit from the region. Visitors interested in culture and history will therefore find more here than a single historical narrative.
Churches and Historic Architectural Styles
Kostel sv. Petra a Pavla is a single-nave late Baroque Roman Catholic church with a tower in the west façade. It was built in 1781. The organ has a different precise date: it was installed in June 1750. Kostel Božího Spasitele represents a different architectural style: the church is pseudo-Romanesque and dates from the early 20th century; it was consecrated on November 9, 1902. Late Baroque design and pseudo-Romanesque architecture thus stand side by side as distinct styles.
Vodní tvrz Hlubany also broadens the perspective on regional architectural history. The Gothic water castle in Hlubany, Podbořany, dates from the second half of the 14th century and is surrounded by a moat. Its architectural type and surrounding water feature differ markedly from the churches in Podbořany. It offers another cultural and historical point of interest, without focusing on the same period as the churches.
Rubín and the Cycling Route
Vrch Rubín connects landscape history with archaeological history. It was inhabited for almost 4,000 years, from the Neolithic to the Iron Age, and is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in northwestern Bohemia. It has been protected as a significant landscape feature since September 2, 1993. Its long history of settlement and protected status offer two distinct historical perspectives: archaeological and landscape-related.
The municipal cycling route “Trasa A – Po stopách Schillera” offers a different focus. The 18.4-kilometer circular route runs from Podbořany through Kryry and Vroutek, returning to Podbořany. Its route and total length set this cycling option apart from the individual buildings and exhibitions. Městské koupaliště Podbořany has a 50-meter swimming pool and a children’s pool; check current availability before visiting.
