Hop-growing history, late Baroque architecture and unusual railway structures give Deštnice a distinctive cultural and historical character. The town lies in Džbán Nature Park. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a stay focused on local history and the surrounding landscape, you can choose your destination with these themes in mind.

Landscape and hiking trail

Extensive coniferous and mixed forests surround Deštnice; fields and hop gardens break up the wooded landscape. A blue-marked hiking trail passes through Sádek, a district of Deštnice, running from Veletice railway station via Pravda to Líšťany. Check the trail markings before setting out.

Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary

The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary is a late Baroque building dating from 1783. It has a rectangular, single-nave layout, with a semicircular apse. The main altar also reflects a distinct period: it was originally designed in the Rococo style and was remodeled in the 19th century. The building’s form and altar thus tell of different periods in the church’s history, without reducing the structure to a single stylistic feature.

Hop museum and research history

The hop museum is housed in a former hop-drying kiln within a farm complex. It presents the history of the hop research station since 1926, as well as a photo gallery documenting work in hop cultivation. The collection includes technical equipment, an original kiln and hop tokens for the quarter. The history of research, insights into cultivation work and technical objects thus stand side by side as different aspects of the local hop-growing tradition.

Records from the late 17th and early 18th centuries mention hop cultivation in Deštnice. A breeding station for cereals and hops was established here in 1925. From 1 January 1926, Karel Osvald led breeding work at the agricultural experimental station in Deštnice; under his leadership, the first selection work on hops began in 1927. The selective breeding of Osvald’s hop clones stabilized the quality of Czech hops. Three hop clones for different soil types bear the name Dr. Osvald.

After phylloxera destroyed European vineyards, hops remained the most important crop in Deštnice. Records from the 18th and 19th centuries ranked Deštnice hops among the highest-quality hops in the entire region. These historical references complement the museum’s exhibits, which span early cultivation, breeding work and the later importance of hops to the region.

Bridges and historical traces

Among Deštnice’s technical landmarks are two bridges built one above the other: a road bridge crosses a stream, with a railway bridge above it. The municipality also has a railway underpass through the embankment; this section of the line dates from 1870. The small, 1 m-wide viaduct tunnel supports the railway line and also channels water from a forest plot through the tunnel into a ravine.

The now-vanished settlement of Nedvídkov, also called Nedvíkov or Medvídkov, lay southeast of Deštnice. It included a fortress and a manorial farmstead. The settlement disappeared during the 15th century under the rule of the Lobkowicz family. Its history adds another chapter to the story of the area, alongside the more recent traces of the church, agriculture and railway.
