Počedělice combines the Ohře Cycle Route No. 6 with a local history that has tangible points of reference at the village square and the Church of St. Gallus. This offers two distinct focuses when planning your visit: a cycling tour connected to a wider network of routes, or a stay centred on architectural and village history. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can plan your stay around whichever of these interests you more.
Cycling through Počedělice
The Ohře Cycle Route No. 6 runs through Počedělice. It continues to Litoměřice, where it connects to the Elbe Cycle Route No. 2. In the broader context, the Ohře Cycle Route runs from the river’s source between the Bavarian towns of Bischofsgrün and Bad Weißenstadt to Litoměřice. This means the local section can be seen as part of a longer cycling connection. Check the route conditions and signage before setting off.
Village square and architectural history
The Church of St. Gallus was built in the Late Romanesque style. It was extended in the Gothic style in the 14th century, and its west façade was remodelled in the Baroque style in 1760. This sequence spans several building phases over the centuries. The protected area includes the church, the perimeter wall, a stone cross, 16 cast-iron crosses and the enclosed plots. The protected ensemble therefore includes more than just the church building. The two later alterations affected different aspects: the church was extended in the 14th century, while its west façade was remodelled in 1760. Looking at the building’s history, you can distinguish the change to the structure from the later façade treatment.
The settlement layout also adds to the architectural history: Počedělice was founded as a market village with a regular, square village green. A stone cross in the western part of the village square marks the water level reached during the devastating flood of 2 February 1862. It links the square to a precisely dated event and a specific aspect of the village’s flood history. The Zdeněk Sýkora memorial panel in Počedělice is open to the public year-round.
The Ohře and the landscape
Počedělice lies on the left bank of the Ohře, in the hinterland of the České středohoří Protected Landscape Area. The land is used predominantly for agriculture. Forests cover only a small part of the municipality and lie in the Ohře valley southwest of Volenice. This information about land use and the location of woodland adds context about the wider municipality to the details about the river and cycle route.
